10 cars that shouldn't be scrapped

10yr old cars are so un(non)recyclable I'm surprised the green lobby hasn't kicked off!

Much cheaper (better) for the enviroment to keep them running than produce new cars.

But then that's not what this is about. The Gov. now not Green but caring about the car industry......

Spot on. They give huge amounts of taxpayer's money to Jaguar/LandRover to build gas guzzlers, which they then persuade us not to buy by slapping on enormous 'green taxes'.

How does that work, exactly?

You have to seperate logic from politics.

They are only interested in votes and have a 4yr vision...

Its a shame, but i'm hoping as there are several conditions laid down on giving up your car for scrap it wont have to much of an impact in years to come, not like they'll be able to clear everything off the roads i hope, a few of every model should scrape through, they made less than 25,000 of my coupe worldwide and mine managed to survive 34 years so theres still hope for classics in the future, you know what to do, if your worried, buy up a really nice example of something and stash it away for the future, it'll only go up in value as the rest get scrapped.

So, Darling, let me put this in English. This week I can give my 10 year old car to a dealer and receive £2000 discount on the MRRP? But last week I could get a trade-in value and perhaps a £3000 discount ( depending on car )? And the benefit is ??

4 years? Ah, if only.....! I think they just work to the next local elections, mayoral elections, conference season. A politician is one who can talk endlessly and with statesmanlike authority about longterm vision whilst doing nothing at all about it and can still sleep soundly at night.

Technically its not even a £2000 discount unless the car your trading in is worth nothing at all on the open market, and as it has to be MOT'd thats doubtfull.

Motoring at MSN have named 10 pre 1999 cars that should be saved from the scrapper. They include the Mercedes W126 but alas not the W201 or W124.
Any more suggestions for your 10 ? http://cars.uk.msn.com/News/Top_ten_article.aspx?cp-documentid=16283027

I thought the article was a bit crap to be honest. The cars mentioned are close to classic status and would be picked up easily if in half decent condition. I doubt if any of those cars will get traded in for 2k in the next year. Most of the cars that will, are likely to be commuter rust buckets, that probably should be off the road.

The other little detail not widely mentioned is that only a finite sum has been set aside to fund this scheme and , once this fund has been exhausted , the scheme will end .

One estimate I saw was that the scheme will run for a few months , possibly a year or so at most , depending on how quickly/how many people take up the offer .

BTW , the government is only putting up £1000 towards the 'scrappage' scheme with the other half being matched by the dealer , so by this logic you can automatically expect a 'discount' of at least £1000 off the sticker price on any new car if you have no trade in .
