hi all I am new to this site an have a big problem with my 2002 108cdi , last year I had new injectors fitted , o rings on fuel rail done , new diesel filters an fuel pipes done van was fine until 2 days before the new year I drove to my daughters an stopped the engine went into the house for a bit then the van would not start all the lights on the dash come on then when you turn the key nothing , it would not even try to start so phoned breakdown , he came out an checked the battery which was fine an said he thought it was the starter motor got the van recovered to the garage I use he put it on the code finder an only one fault came up so I had a new starter fitted , he cleared the fault code now the van will start but stops straight away an when the codes are checked again the same code comes up you can't get to run at all any ideas ? someone has said it could be an imobiliser fault an that I need to get a merc mechanic to recode the keys or the computer needs replacing but with the amount I have already spent I am loosing the will to keep going please help any ideas would be good thank for reading :dk:

What was fault code exactly?
It's not immobilizer, it won't allow engine to start at all. EIS or CPS problems could cause engine cut out. Codes should be read right when engine has died (hope your garage has star diagnostic), but problems above are not always leaving a code, because car thinks everything is as it should be.
Low fuel pressure or injector solenoid temporary open circuit should leave a code too.

I once read a post for a similar problem somewhere
It mentioned that jump starting, or re-connecting a battery, etc, while the keys are still in the ignition switch can sometimes cause problems with the authorisation codes (immobiliser) stored in the key fob and result in the momentary start/stop that you describe.

Recoding the keys might be necessary if this is the case with yours

the van has not been jump started nor has the battery been touched it went from going fine to nothing an I'm not sure what the code was but when its cleared an the van is started the same code comes up

the van has not been jump started nor has the battery been touched

I think you might be wrong there........ No mechanic, that I know, would replace a starter motor without first disconnecting the battery.

the battery was disconnected to fit the starter but the keys were not in it an the fault code came up before the starter was changed, I had to have a new starter as the van would not start now it will start but not run

Possible fueling issue. You need to check you have fuel pumping/pressure. It could be a blocked filter or faulty pump. Or even a vac leak. Sounds like you have fuel to start it but then it shuts off.

It reads like an Immobiliser or fuel pump relay fault. What type of key does the van have, a normal metal blade or a plastic electronic key?

It does look like an immobiliser fault, do you have a spare key to try?

just a update for anyone who is interested I have had a mercedes man look at the van an he said the ECU had a fault so I have had that replaced an STILL it will not go :wallbash:

What code ? Was it a merc main dealer who replaced ecu ? with a brand new one ? any dash lights when it cuts out ?

Last edited:
the code was ECU fault an yes it was a mercedes '' service to you '' man in a van which fitted a new ECU it starts as it should but then just stops there are no other lights on the dash other than the normal ones when your van stops

Why was the starter changed if ECU fault came up ?
