ok lets go van starts and runs fine cab heater blowing nice and hot but after 10 miles the heater goes stone cold temp gauge shoots up trying to overheat let it cool for 10 mins heater goes hot again runs fine for 10 miles then all happens again.

changed waterpump thermostat no difference
had it pressure tested and for exhaust fumes in water but nothing. no water in oil no bubbling in header tank

i have noticed that when its trying to overheat the rad is cold no water flow so changed rad no difference.
removed thermostat altogether run with out but the same no waterflow around rad when trying to overheat. after a 10 min cool down water starts flowing around rad and heater get hot anain but only for 10 miles again.
it has a 12v aux water pump on bulkhead when trying to overheat same no water getting to it 10 min cool down then water flows again.

hope you can understand what i mean

so if the 12v aux pump is going or playing up would this cause no water flow around rad???
Is it poss to put fan belt on wrong way after waterpump change??

or can anyone suggest anything else

thanks Mike

I had a very similar problem with one of my cars, it was trapped air ?, have you tried to bleed the system with the heater turned to Max??

yes tried that for an hour heater stays hot but as soon as you go for a drive it happens again :(

This may sound mad so please don't be insulted but is the new thermostat in the correct way? If it is allowing hot water though as it cools but stops water when it is heating up…..or am I talking rubbish?

Lol no I am running with no thermostat in at the moment but I can only go in one way

Then I'm with Parksie14; airlock. Doesn't make much sense otherwise.

So this problem Mike... on my 638294 engine the stat is built into a housing and is non-removable. how did you remove yours ? or is your engine not the same as what i have ?

ok so i'm reading the first post. Because you have a mismatch with parts etc. i wonder if you cooling system feeds through the internal heater matrix. I'm not sure about vito but my vclass has a thermostat sort of regulator on the heater matrix which adjusts the temp inside. I am thinking maybe your cooling is going through this matrix and when the temp goes up it shuts off and causes overheat. I know that mine has a complicated arrangement of hoses. You may need to follow all hoses and get a good picture of where the water is flowing. the belt only fits one way anyway. and the water pump should do all the pumping needed.

Certainly an odd one. I have had cooling problems in past due to fans being wired wrong way, so blowing against the airflow through front etc, but not one like this. Please let us know what the problem was when you resolve it.
If you have one of those digital laser thermometers it may help track where heat is getting to in pipes etc?
Could an old hose be collapsing when it gets hot/softer?

The only other suggestion I can add is some flushing solution in case of blockages in the system , but if there was I guess you would never get heat .

If the water pump has a plastic impeller it could be slipping when hot. saw a 5 series having similar problems and the impeller had lost its vanes altogether! Good luck either way. Sometimes these sort of problems end up being something very simple.

I agree there is no water even getting to matrix with engine running and matrix pipes off there's just no flow so it looks like I will be stripping the pump again tomorrow was easier the first time as the engine was out now I can see this being a stressful job

Yes I know.
It’s still nice to see if and how it was fixed...
(If the OP is still here)

You will find a lot of expert knowledge on here so if you have a specific question just ask and I am sure someone will come along that can help :)

Thank you DSM10000.
At the mo I’m not even sure what to ask about first...
Just though I’d got a bargain but the gods must be pissed with me as the radiator blew 3 days after buying it...
The engine is in a shockingly rusty state and I fear I’ve just got a van that will keep
Me poor over the next few years...
I do hope it’s not quite the nail I think it is...
Fitted and bled the radiator myself and all seems ok at the mo..
Lost some ATF oil when I removed the radiator and don’t even have the money to buy a litre as I just paid 50 for 10 litres of coolant!!!
I JUST WANT A GOOD VAN!!!
anyhoo.
Thank you for the moral boost.
I’ll get posting once I’ve actually started driving it about the place...
Seana
