The cable could be for for the rear fuel pump, or possibly the fuel tank sender unit.

So.... I changed the ASR/ABS ECU with a used part bought on that well known online auction site - no joy. I then reluctantly resorted to my normal repair garage who diagnosed a fault on the VDO cruise control ECU. This was replaced with a used part that they had in stock and the fault has now gone
