A follow-up, to let those who contributed know the result!
Having failed dismally to sort anything myself, I finally found Cayman Auto Services, in Dorking, who specialise in powered convertible tops and sunroofs.
(After a 135-mile drive there) I checked the car in at 0830, and by 1030 they rang me with diagnosis: "recent bodywork has involved welding, which has melted a switch, part of the wiring harness and also right through a hydraulic line".
They had six cars in, of different makes, and had in stock the position switch, wiring and two pipes needed for mine. All done, system refilled and bled, codes cleared, demonstrated working. £768 inc VAT, which was painful, but I would use them again if I had roof problems. They were intelligent and helpful, and have the cleanest, tidiest workshop EVER.
I wrote to the rust-proofing firm which had done the welding (as part of renewing the underseal) and, I'm delighted to say, they apologised and sent me the £768. All is well with the world!
