Aren't dealers great, I'm not sure which dealership is wrong,
my newly aquired 96 124 has had the door handle sensor knocked out, York Mercedes tell me its coded to the car and is 66 quid, Harrogate Mercedes tell me it isn't and is 172 quid:crazy:

So is it coded to the car, or will one off any car fit, also how do those handles come off, I followed the Haynes instructions for a Keyed lock and it doesn't move:(

I wonder if I could change it all over for a key system?

As its only a sensor and not a control unit you could buy one from a breaker,,,

I have never known one to be coded, and I hope that I am not wrong

I have spent an hour reading it all, and there are a few versions of it, they key part must still work though with the vacuum system, or maybe that has been removed too, this is just a switch that runs the vacuum pump. you have the identaical infra red sensor on the boot, does that work

100% the unit is NOT coded. Its just a infra red receiver. I have swapped units before, as the bodyshop pulled the lead off mine when taking the door apart.

Thank you very much for coming in on this, I was 99% certain, but thats not good enough

thanks again

Hi I just found the unit in the door:o
I've put it all together, the hand set led is flashing but the system still doesnt work, I'm now very confused:confused:

HELP 124 infa red (again)

I now have both sensors in place and the light flashing in the remote, but no locking:confused:

Could the handset be duff even though its flashing?

Is there somthing else in the system that could be broken?

How do I test it?

Shall I give up and buy a keyed lock set (is that even possible)?

The doors locks are actuated by the cars vacuum system driven by a pump under the rear seat. They are controlled by electrical signals. To check the operation you should be able to "centrally lock/ unlock " all the doors via the key in front passenger door. You should hear all the locks moving when you do this. If this doesn't happen you probably have a vacuum problem. Can be the pump or a leak in the pipework/actuators. If the pump runs OK the try isolating each actuator to locate the leak. The estate rear tailgate locks often go faulty and dont forget the petrol filler flap in the boot.

Hi Graeme
the whole of the central locking system works fine using the key on the pass. door.
The problem is when I point the remote at the sensors they dont light up, even though I repaired the remote and it now flashes when I hold the button down.
I was going to buy a new remote and try it but they have gone up to 170 quid (100% increase in 2 years  ) so I thought I'd investigate fully first.

Hijack!

Sorry to hijack this thread but I have been advised that it is very difficult to get an alarm fitted to the coupe because it has "vacuum" locking and the Infra red.

Is it possible to get an alarm (Cat 1) which works with both systems?

If not, is it possible to get a Cat 1 alarm which locks the doors with the New fob?

I used to have a Toad Ai606 on the old W126 which worked fine - it didnt have infra red.

Any help would be appreciated.

tia,

KJ

Absolutely altho vacuum operated this is triggered/controlled electrically by the key in the lock or via an infra red remote -there was post on here about that just recently. Either way the alarm is set on/off via the electrical locking signal. If you don't have remote central locking as standard this can be a retro fit as part of a new alarm system.
