Natalie has a w124 280 engined estate with self levelling suspension. We were thinking of getting a w210 e55 estate. We are guessing the ride on the e55 would be considerably harder. Is this the case or is it adjustable via the hydraulic system (if it has one?:o )

Does anyone have comparative experience? We REALLY like the way the 124 rides; is the w210 better?

cheers

I love the W124 ride aswell; It's like driving a giant sofa :)

Can't comment on the W210 though.

You need to ask Andy K - he has both cars

tee hee

We have an e55 saloon and the ride is considerably firmer than our W124 E320 estate running on 16" rims which in turn make it a bit firmer (but in our opinion far better) than one running on 15" rims.

If you are driving on reasonable roads then you'll probably find the e55 tighter through the bends and any body roll (no matter how slight) you've got used to in the W124 will disappear.

Overall there's very little difference. On smooth roads, they both give the same smooth ride, on rougher roads, the e55 will very quickly become tiresome and any loose fillings you have will be falling out.

Other things to consider....

If you are tall, then the W210 seats are far better, the seat squab is a couple of inches longer than on the W124. for all the miles we've done in our W124 that was the one thing that made it less than perfect for me. However, if you are short (5' or so) you may find the W210 seats uncomfortable as the edge of the seat will catch on the back of your shins.

There's more room in the back seats of the W210 - back seat pasengers suffer a bit in W124s if the driver is tall and the lack of rear air vents means it can get stuffy in the back if the car is fully loaded.

Build quality? They are both good and they both go rusty and they both seem to have similar weak points. Wings, door edges, wheel arches and subframes/cross members. I'm not sure which has the most "known issues" but it must be pretty close. On the W124 watch out for knackered wiring looms, cylinder head problems, corroded rear sub frames, brake pipes and suspension components on W210s look out for rust. There's not much to choose on interiors but the avantgarde trim on our E55 is just a bit nicer than the interior of the E320.

Finding a good W124 these days can get a bit tricky (ask Nick) as a lot of them fell off the dealer network a good few years ago. Some will have been well maintained, some neglected. It's hard to tell them apart because they just carry huge mileages and lack of care so well. E55s are different, most of them seem to have a full service history and (so far) up until recently have been expensive enough to put the "idiots" off

Shop around and see what your money will buy. Six thousand will get you a decent W210 e55 estate with full MBSH but at the same time, that money will buy you two (or even three) W124 estates if you shop around

Which would I choose? Both (as Nick says, Im a greedy sod :)), but in my opinion the e55 has the edge just because it's so much fun to drive. If you asked Annie (my other half) she'd say the E320 as she's only 5ft tall but she's no judge because she'd actually prefer the W123 280E Ian's buying off us which I think handles like a sofa :)

Who cares about the ride - think of the fun in an E55 estate

Bad news, Andy: I just bought a 320 with sports chassis, leather interior, 5-speed, a/c, cruise an ting

Now I keep looking at my diesel sideways...

Due to a space constraint we would have to get rid of the 124 if we went for the e55. I guess we need to test drive a few to see what we think. The pace of the 55 is tempting but I dont fancy having my bones shaken apart.

ANdy K - is the suspension different for the saloon verses estate version of the 210 as it is for the 124?

Having your bones shaken apart won't happen if you are driving on normal roads, but it soon becomes apparent that the suspension is quite "sporty" when there are raised manhole covers or potholes :)

I assume that the suspension on the W210 estates is the same system as the W124s, you don't really notice that it's different from the saloon under normal conditions, the only time you are ever aware of it is when it goes wrong :(

kth286 - not everybody likes avocado :) I think it is a fair comparison these days. They are not dissimilar cars, mid sized family saloons/estates both made by Mercedes.

Many will have similar mileage (give or take twenty thousand :)) and high priced examples of one will be roughly the same as lower priced examples of the other.

I've driven both of ours this weekend and the difference is nowhere near as great as you are suggesting.

Mattc - are there any forum members near to you that can let you have a drive of one of their cars? That's probably the best way to get an honest comparison and not have to listen to a salesman whilst you are trying to make up your mind

The difference between my sport chassis 124 coupe and Nats estate is quite considerable; especially when the road is less than stellar. Nats is a far superior ride (insert your own joke here) on those occasions. Thats part of the reason I was asking the specific question about estates. I suppose the only way we could tell is a test drive.

I dont know if any forum members have such a beast nearby - happy to extend my insurance and test drive one if anyone out there has one:D

Oh dear me Matt. We have to sit down (over a glass of red) and talk to get this silly notion out of your head. :D:devil:

210 E55 plus's.

Rapid acceleration, feel good factor, engine sound.

Negative's.

AMG tax on spare parts. Internal rust issues (chassis X member etc), fuel costs at 15mpg (your driving style). Water based paint. 16 spark plugs at Mb cost £144 and are a pig to change.

124 Plus's.

Nice ride, spare parts are plentiful and reasonably cost effective i.e cheap. Easy to drive. Fair on fuel.

Negatives

Rust on wings etc, wiring looms on 320 and 280's, air con on older ones always seem to give problems.

There will be other things I have not mentioned, as others will agree. But at the end of the day its what you want to drive that's important. So keep the 124 :bannana:

apparently, I can't afford beer anymore - my car is going to fall apart, spark plugs cost nearly £150, it's only going to do 15 to the gallon and all the parts have an AMG tax on them!!!!

Aren't you a little ray of sunshine then????

See you at the weekend, I'm sure we'll scrape enough together to buy a couple of pints
