14 years for an accident?

There is no mention of the word accident in the following charges.
Causing death by dangerous driving
Causing death by careless driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Causing death by careless driving*
Causing death by driving: unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured drivers*

* the 2 new offences

all these charges involve demonstrating a degree of culpability of action so nothing "accidental" about it.

If you'd listened to the Today programme (or the link on the page) then the guy was making a lot of sense.

There was much said about "exposing" drivers to a prison sentence - and trying to make it a bit clearer in regard to the difference between "careless" and "dangerous". Also the guidelines, he said, are like a matrix - as the elements making up the offense tot up, so does the minimum sentence (e.g. on a mobile, failing to stop, DUI would be a higher sentence than just on a mobile).

He made a good comment that driving is not a right, it's a responsibility.
