Hi, I have never driven my diesel car continuously for more then 4 hours. I am planning a 16 hour road trip over the weekend. Can a diesel engine survive continous running for 16 hours? Thanks.

Of course.

When I drove my 211 into Europe it was running for near enough 24hrs continuously. (Drivers changed)

The type of engine on your car was run continuously on test beds in Sindelfingen for 250,000, as part of routine production testing.

The challenge for you is whether your car has been well maintained, or whether it has some fault lurking within, especially around cooling.

So, in principle, it can be fine. If you're driving a 17 year old car that has already done a quarter of a million miles, it might be wise to consider when it was last serviced, and how thoroughly.

Enjoy the drive, don't forget to change driver regularly, and take a break every two hours - or else the most dangerous component will be the driver.

.

Engine oil between changes is expected to last between 100 and 300 hours. 16 hours on a regularly serviced engine is no problem.

Thanks guys for your comforting remarks! For refueling we'll stop obviously but I was told that a diesel engine needs to be rested after 4-5 hours of continuous driving. My car is properly maintained and I did a oil change last month, it does consume oil a bit but otherwise is fine. I was weary of Air conditioning running continuously though during the trip.

Should I consider changing the engine oil after the trip?

Do you change the oil every 16 hours?

Stick to the normal service schedule
I dont change it after every 8000 km but I was just thinking that oil may degrade faster on long journeys?

Ive done 16 hours non stop and 24 hours non stop in diesel cars. Never even considered it would be an issue for the car and it wasn’t. It was a huge issue for the humans. The 24 hour journey wa okay as four of us shared the driving. 16 hours was myself and wife but she was too tired to take over. Did same journey twice more but split into 8 hours one day and 8 the next. Much more sensible.

As said by another, just service at the correct mileage interval. And no engine needs resting - only refuelling.

Engines are happiest when they’re running. A Diesel engine is designed for the task in hand. Rest the driver, not the car. Enjoy your road trip.

Drive appropriately and let the engine relax as much as you obviously should.

Safe trip !

Engines are designed to run. Also, they are under stressed at motorway driving speeds. I remember visiting a Honda facility many years ago. They had engines running in cages at ~6000rpm and at full resistance for months at a time.
Only the vehicle owner will know if it's up to the task though.
The engine is only one point to note though. Tyres, brakes and suspension are all valid health points to check as well before a long trip.
I'd drive my W211 OM642 with 240k miles around Europe tomorrow. But I'd maybe take the train if someone offered me a Nissan Juke with 40k miles, budget tyres and a n/s steering pull.

Buses & Taxi's run all day long. Drive as much you want but safely and let the engine relax. Tyres brakes and suspension must be checked before a long trip, for better performance.
