I just called sales up and he said that 225/45/18 tyres would fit a 98 W202. I was also told that 225/45/17 tyres would fit. I may be going crazy, but surely if 17s fit on a certain tyre, the 18s wouldn't fit the same tyre (with a different rim size ofcourse)... Please help. :(

Correct, the profile would need to be less on the 18" tyre, so a 225/45/18 tyre would NOT be suitable for a w202, it'd throw the speedo out etc. 225/40/18 would work though.

Sweet... So, now what's all this I hear about getting 35s at the back and 40s at the front?

Only neccessary if you have different wheel/tyre widths front/rear.

Front:
I presume if you're having 225 tyres front then it's a 7.5" wide rim.
225/40/18 tyres.

Rear:
If the rim is 8.5" wide at the rear.
245/35/18 tyres.

if you're going for styling II amg alloys (which I seem to remember you going for) in 18" diameter, they are 8" wide at the front and 9" at the back. Correct size for a W202 would be 225/40 x 18 at the front and 255/35 x 18 at the rear.

for 17"'s they are 225/45 x 17 at the front and 245/40 x 17 at the rear. The rims are 7.5" and 8.5" wide respectively.

That's only if you are getting the staggered width setup of course. you can obviously just put same widths all round.

Ah cool, nah, I'm not going for anything AMG. I'm going for Lorinser style Mercedes replicas. :) Nice and cheap... Well in comparison anywayz.

Anyone know the standard width for the 15" that came on a W202 sport (pre facelift)? Is it 7.5? If so can a 225/55/15 be put on instead of 205/60/15?

Any ideas?

6.5

And standard fit tyres would have been 195/65/15

Although if we are talking about the 15" AMG wheels, the width may be different ... anybody know ?

You'd be amazed at the tyre sizes that will fit a certain wheel, you can go about 1" either way on the tyre width and it'd still be ok. I noticed that my previous w202 had wider rear tyres on the option list, they were long-gone by the time I bought the car but I thought it was funny that it had staggered TYRES but not wheels :)
front: 205/55/16
rear: 225/50/16.
same wheels! :)

In Germany lots of the cars have 9-10" wide rims but only 8-9" wide tyres, so the lip of the rim is exposed, and I've seen a few with nasty kerb-rashes, but that's how they like their wheels and tyres in Germany!
