I've got an E class Avantgarde Estate, 300td 1999. It has 18" AMG alloys on it, the flat ones with the 5 slots (how's that for a description?). Part number for the wheels is HWA1294010102 and they are marked 8J x 18H2 ET31. Made in Austria too.
The front right used to catch the wheel arch over speed bumps occasionally when fitted with Dunlop Sport Maax tyres (235 x 40 X 18). Not such an issue with the Continentals I have now.

Here are the questions,

Is the marginal clearance unusual?

As the fronts are due for replacement, would 225 x 40 x 18 be a good idea, because they are cheaper, and would they help the clearance?

Is the ET31 offset correct for this application? All four wheels are the same.

Any recommendations regarding tyres, the contys appear soft / wear quickly and are expensive.

Thanks for any help !

The wheels and tyres are standard fit and SHOULD NOT Catch under any circumstances.

You must have a suspension issue of some sort for this to occur.
Changing from the original size is not reccomended.

If you want tyres that last better than the continentals and much cheaper go for kumho's, great for a medium range tyre.

If you want to spend a bit more michelins seem to last long in general, but you will pay a lot more.

I've been running 235/35/19's on the front of my E320cdi for 18months now and would never change away from the Kumho's. These are the 3rd set of tyres having replaced goodyear eagle f1's and michelin pilot sports.

Goodyear eagles were quiet and smooth and loads of grip but dissapeared so quickly, michelins had a lot more life but a little more tyre noise, kumho's seem a little quieter, have similiar amounts of grip and have outlasted the goodyears by double and the michelins by a good few thousand miles.

The tyre sizes are correct but to run AMG 8j rims you need the arches rolled, per AMG spec.

don't mean to doubt you dieselman, but we've not had the arches rolled on the cars we have with these wheels on? 2 of them are facelifted models which have different wings...don't know if that is the reason and the earlier E430 we have could have had the arches rolled by the previous owner, i'll have a look/feel tomorrow.

Actually just thought about it, my cdi with 235/35/19's have an offset of 35 and not 31, maybe the 4mm difference is all that's needed...

Hi

18" AMG wheels do not rub on mine, new wings were fitted by MB due to rust but the wings from memory seem to have been rolled.

There is defo a job description on WIS for rolling arches. Maybe newer prefacelift wings automatically come rolled???????

That will make the rim retreat further into the arch, so possible.

The standard rims are 7.5" and ET41 so an 8" rim would need an offset of 44mm to have the outer edge in the same place.
The 31mm offset will push the rim further out, so it will rub.

the few mm offset make all the differance! also you may have lower spring pads which may also make that little bit of differance.

wheels are the right ones, I have to use Pirrelli`s on my 202 fronts otherwise all other makes seem to catch!

OK, thanks for all the help everyone I'll stick with 235's and try Kumhos next.

Hi 230K what tyre dressing do you use it looks very smart, as does the rest of the car from the photo?

What do you mean by rolled arches? This was my E55 W210 with 18" AMG wheels. Are these arches rolled or not?

This was my E240 are these rolled, they look very similar. Both were face lift models?

Mine runs same wheels and the archs are rolled, rolled means the inside of the arch if not flat ie paralell to the ground but rolled up to move the lip away from the tyre.

Try a google.

They are close but they have never touched.

All W210 cars with 8" AMG rims specified as built had AMG 'Body mod'. It should show on the datacard.

On mine i can only see option 676 sports chassis (avantgarde?) with 5 hole light alloy wheels and wide tyres.

I am sure i read rolled archs somewhere in the docs but cannot find it.

OK. Then the E55 W210 was "rolled up" as I remember cleaning out the mud that accumulated, but I can'tremember on the E240, it was an Avantgarde with with factory option 676 sports suspension 8J x 17 235 / 45 tyres.
