I'm back again  :bannana: ,just bought a 92 W201 2.5D manual...Got a few jobs to do,but won't get a chance till the weekend,so I thought I'd throw it out to you guys first for some pointers. Firstly there is a knock/vibration from the rear end, sounds like exhaust, but I'm sure it isn't..but you can feel it through the body. This is the main thing..

Speedo not working, cable broken.no dash lights apart from the clocks themselves..2 electric windows not working, and no lights in the switches..boot is soaking with condensation.. and finally the top end of the engine seems noisy at tickover, tappety.Starts and runs great, but just louder than I would like.

On the upside, the body is very good,VERY clean underbonnet, and drives nicely (apart from that vibration)

Happy new year to everyone!!

a few suggestions

rear knock/ vibration---differential mountings? halfshaft UJs? subframe mountings?rear handbrake shoes ?rear suspension arm bushes?
electric windows -- fuses?
boot soaking-- boot sealing rubber? leaking back screen?

hey Grober!

Diff mountings sound about right, thats the sound/feel...
Electric windows-N/S/R AND O/S/F. Are they fused in this way?
boot has condensation all inside the lid,but boot itself is fairly dry.

Thanks for the suggestions, gives me things to mull over before the weekend!

If the water is getting in via the boot seal, you can sometimes fix this by rotating it. But if yours has corrosion at the base of the rear screen, by the corners, you may need to remove the screen and weld in a patch.
Vibration though car - exhaust heat shields loose and rattling?
Good luck - these are great cars.

According to HAYNES the near side front and rear are fed off one 16amp fuse the offside front and rear off another 16 amp fuse. Both fuses fed from the common power window relay in the relay box under the bonnet. So bang goes my theory! wiring seems to be a bit different on the front and rear switches but to eliminate the switches a swop of near to offside front--------- and near to offside rear would be worth a try. I read people have taken these switches to bits and repaired them on the W123 and w126 series of cars but this probably doesnt apply to 190s dont know?? see http://www.mercedesshop.com/Wikka/SwitchRefurb

boot lid condensation---- sometimes you get hidden water under the boot liners in the 2 wells at each side of the boot. My 96 e220 boot has little ventilator flaps there behind the liners----cant remember if my 190s had this or not might be worth a look???

Tappet noise on these engines is standard. Replace the offending tappets if you want to

Non-functioning windows will probably be faulty motors/mechanisms

Vibration could be anything - there's lots of rubber in the drivetrain & suspension and it all wears. I'd start with diff bushes & prop doughnuts. Check the diff isn't low on oil. It will be leaking - they all do

Thanks!! The windows are fused left front/ Right rear and vice versa according to the fusebox cover...thats as far as I got today. ABS buld was removed, fitted a new one and guess what...yup it stays on.Pretty sure the vibes are propshaft/diff related, and the boot leak seems to be coming from INSIDE the boot lid? Must be the lock? I'll keep ya posted!

If you figure out where the water is getting into your boot from then please let me know. I fear i may be having the same problem.

When I had a 190, I had water in the boot too. Found that it was getting in via a poor seal by the offside tail lamp.

I will check that out, but i think it may be coming in somewhere else as i have a mini deluge, from the lock area, all over the inside of my boot every time it gets opened. At this time of year that is quite regularly as i keep my wellies in the aforementioned boot.

Before going for changing the tappets give the engine a flush and even remove the tappets and strip them down. In addition run injector cleaner through as the noise may only be diesel knock or just injectors operating as they can be pretty loud.

Found the vibration to be caused by the propshaft centre bearing..just about to go and put the car on ramps and change it...Its blowing a gale and raining...wish me luck!

WATER IN BOOT

Hi
on my 190 the water in the boot was coming from a poorly fited spoiler, if it rained hard or after I washed the car I'd always get water pouring in from the lock area in the lid itself when I opened it,
boot was dry until it was opened.
if your car is fited with a boot spoiler take a look here aswell !

Glad you found the problem- could be the flexible mount or the bearing or both! the exhaust heat shield tends to hide things up there quite well!

All done, had the car out for a spin, and its now as it should be! the rubber had torn away all round the bearing, allowing it to move which was causing the noise and vibration :bannana: Bearing was about 9 quid and housing was 11,from Euro Car Parts.

Good result Tiff. Pretty cheap fix too.

So what do you think to the old sludge-burner then?

Its my first diesel Merc, last were a W202 C200,and a W124 230E.The build quality seems to be on par with the 230,i.e old skool Mercedes engineering.I found the C200 nicer to drive though, with better steering. At least the 190 has a HANDbrake!
The D is pretty slow, but I don't mind this,(passed my bike test now!! If I want speed,I'll take the bike!)and it seems to be very economical.I do find it noisy though, but I think the diff is louder than it ought to be,although the engine is suprisingly quiet on the move, much different to the clatter at idle!

I think it'll take time and miles to bond with it,I didn't realise how much I liked my C class 'till I didn't have it,and the 124 was great, but I'm not too keen on autos,or the fuel consumption....so the 2.5D SHOULD give me what I want and need. I like Mercs to be basic and original, thats how I remember them as a kid visiting relatives in Germany..I walked away from a couple because of the usual chrome arches and hooge alloys.I even intend to get rid of the standard alloys on it and put on proper steels and genuine hubcaps. Its a car I appriciate because of the quality of the engineering, not the bling factor and the gunsight on the bonnet!!!!

I hope to get to the breakers on saturday, and get various bits and bobs to make it nice.Someone has butchered the centre console, and put holes in for a phone...GRRR,also an aerial on the rear of the roof that really gets my goat! need to find why the drivers temp control does'nt do anything, and fix the ABS..then its a good bath and a polish!!

If you're that desperate for a bath you can pop round anytime. I didn't know life was so hard up in the frozen North.
