Various.
I was going up to see this today, that is until I checked it's MOT history.
1994 MERCEDES 190E AUTO BLUE/SILVER 1 LADY OWNER WOW on eBay (end time 05-Apr-11 21:19:24 BST)

It fail on 22.03.11 for rust in the sills & a couple of other things:
Reason(s) for refusal to issue Certificate
Front Exhaust system not adequately supported (7.1.1b)
Nearside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c)
Offside Rear Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c)
Offside Rear sill to floor Vehicle structure has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings (6.1.3)

No mention in the listing of any rust, no mention in 2 telephone conversations, rather it's presented as a 1 owner cream puff - "THE BODY WORK IS IN FANTASTIC CONDITION".

Be careful out there!

Presumably the floor has been welded for the MOT as...

hi there it has a years mot and 1 months tax

Always pays to be cautious , but to be honest it does not appear to be much of a problem. Exhaust = new bracket ? , couple of brake pipes. "Excessive corrosion " in M.O.T. language could be any area of rust , i.e. the size of your fingernail , within 30cms /12 inches of a suspension point . Assuming that remedial work was carried out (states 12 months MOT ) , may well be worth a look .At least you now know what to look for!;)

And surely no real surprise that a 17 year old car might have needed a couple of break pipes, and exhaust bracket and a plate on the sill to pass its mot?

Looks like a clean enough car to me, it's not exactly at ironside prices...

I agree... overall the car does look reasonably decent for its age.

The only issue I have is really this:

'I HAVE BEEN ASKED TO SELL THIS CAR ON BEHALF... THE CAR IS STILL REGISTERED IN THE LADY'S NAME'

This could be an attempt by a rogue dealer to sell a car 'privately'... thus no real liability and no come-back.

But them again the story may be genuine.

Thanks for the heads-up:thumb:

Take your point, but most 1994 cars are now Bean cans

I'm not doubting the welding has been done, I'm not denying that many 17 y.o. cars have rust issues & that some of them have bits welded in.

What I'm saying is that a car with the description saying "THE BODY WORK IS IN FANTASTIC CONDITION" shouldn't have any of the above.

If you're happy with the guy's description, including the latest info that it smokes, his phone #'s on the listing, knock yourselves out!

I agree totally. An advert should NOT be misleading/deceptive in any way, for example:
  • contains a false statement of fact
  • conceals or leaves out important facts
  • creates a false impression
"THE ONLY GENUINE FAULT I CAN FIND WITH THE CAR ON THE DRIVERS SEAT "

Come on.. seriously..

I was in a worse situation than the above few years back. A mercedes E220 coupe was advertised as mint condition, the pictures said it all. Upon travelling 100+ miles to Birmingham to my utter disbelief found a pile of s**t... total rust bucket, flat tyres, flat battery and passenger window smashed in. When I asked him politely... wtf happened to the car in the pics... I was told that's how it looked couple years back... funny thing is I felt more of an idiot and basically.. gave him a big chunk of my mind...

Why is a car that at some point has had some trivial underside welding not allowed to be described as "bodywork in fantastic condition"?

If they had stated that it had never been welded than I could see your point.

Given that nobody seems to be doing anything underhand, why rubbish them on a forum??

It's not like they are trying to get big money for it.

If you were lucky enough to submit the winning bid you could then celebrate your good fortune in Blackpool's finest "cabaret pub" over the road !

I hadn't spotted that. That's worth the 464 mile round trip on it's own!

I don't understand what you are getting worked up about. The car failed the MOT on various bits including underside welding. This is all shown in the MOT failure notice.

The work has been done and MOT test passed.

Why should the seller mention anything about the items for failure now.

I don't know anyone that would consider the underside to be bodywork.

I'm not worked up about it. I posted this info up here in case another member, and I know of 1 in particular who is looking for a 190E 2.6, saw this and didn't know how to get the true facts about the car.

What I can't understand is why people are getting het up in defence of an ebay seller caught dead to rights telling porkies!

I specifically asked him if there was any rust on the car by ebay PM once & twice on the phone. He told me no on all three occasions, despite it failing it's MOT on 22.03.2011 for rust.

"Dear kelseypowney90,

Hi,

Any rust problems with this car?

Ta!

No, because the underbody rust has been dealt with by welding or other means.

You should have asked him has it been welded or is it rotten underneath?

I can sort of see your point Neil, but may I ask what you expect of a car of that age?
I only ask because I am quite flabbergasted at what people expect when buying a car for that kind of money.

I had a customer ring me about a 639 Vito we had in for sale and told him that there was the proverbial rust spots here and there but if he kept on top of them they shouldn't spread too bad. I even emailed him photos of the aforementioned rust along with about 20 other various emails before we agreed on a price over the phone.
When he arrived he then proceeded to actually number the separate bits of rust! All the while, the van was pretty low mileage with FMBSH and 12 months MOT and 6 months tax, in fact it was a damn good van for the money, yet because he was Peter Perfect with a small amount of rust I nobbed him off!

It really amazes me these people that want to pay peanuts yet expect brand new.
