190e 2.3 16v bodywork :
ours is going in to be welded, then sometime afterward a full respray. We need outer sills, jacking points and rear arches / quarters.
It was suggested we join the owners club, and buy from Mercedes, being a member of the owners club might get us a healthy discount ?
Can experts advise please.

I question whether such parts would still be available from MB. And not all dealers offer discounts to club members but you might strike lucky.

We get between 5 and 20% discount at our local MB, largely as a result of chatting with the parts chaps and charming them with my 18 month old grandson who's a huge car fan.

I have seen some offers on the internet for replacement metal for these older cars so I should start Googling.

Good hunting.

Any advice or assistance greatfully received. Never restored a car before, so feel a bit out of our depth. Father ( 58 ) and son ( 24 ) project.

Easyparts in Exeter stock some w201 repair panels at reasonable prices. The jacking points internal structure is made of very thick steel so you would have to be unlucky for it to rot out. W201's seem to mostly rot out around the large rubber floor bungs which is part of the outer sill/ floorpan and the sill ends which extend into the rear inner wheel arch.

Thanks, looking at that site now.

Check the rear screen area and all around the parcel shelf underneath (rear screen seals go and water gets where it shouldn’t causing the shelf to rust out and if you’re unlucky the rear screen frame)

Rear wells inside the boot (remove the plastic liners)

Inner wings around the battery tray area

We have a long list of parts needed, can anyone assist in sourcing the engine sound insulation ? Behind the engine, bulkhead, and the underside of the bonnet.

Sills have arrived.
Stage 1 : exhaust engine and gearbox out.
Stage 2 : send off to the welders.

Met Will yesterday.

Just like to say what a nice and helpful guy he is. I now know my car has ASD, and know a lot more about my car. Can't wait to get it on the road.

The under bonnet mat is available from any dealer , and not expensive ; also ask for the special adhesive for it ; they should be able to advise on other parts .

Look at the 190 forum

www.mercedes-190.co.uk there is a lot of good knowledge there .

Finally , reach out to Stefano Mazzoni of Merparts in Port Glasgow - he is the W201 captain of the Mercedes-Benz club and very knowledgeable about these cars ; he and his brother Paul ran EVO 1&2 versions for many years .

FWIW, there’s actually quite a lot of parts that are NLA nowadays sadly - it’s just not economically viable for MB to reproduce some parts when they run out of stock (the cars are approaching 40 years old now).

The main bonnet pad insulation is available aftermarket - the 16v differs slightly and has an aluminium heat shield section on it but otherwise I suspect you could add this if NLA or too expensive from MB. If you’re not worried about 100% originality, the W124 type pads (felt instead of foam) can be trimmed down to fit (and are a bit better quality wise!)

The firewall/bulkhead section definitely check from MB, I’ve not seen this from elsewhere before.

Front wings in particular have latterly been pre facelift only ( without the hole for the repeater ) and you cut your own hole if needed .

Our engine needs a rebore and new pistons, seemingly none available. Anyone on here have any ? w201 190e 2.3 16v 96mm, or 96.5mm ( 2.5 16v pistons no good )

Crewe Engines are the official ( MB approved ) specialists in the UK .

Don't need a whole engine though, just the pistons. No one in the world can supply at present. One or two can make to order, but very expensive.

I doubt Crewe engines have seen a Cosworth (Mercedes 2.3-16) engine in years.

Crewe Engines are the factory approved Mercedes engine rebuilders in the UK and can either rebuild your own engine or usually have warranted rebuilt engines on the shelf which they can supply on an exchange basis . They also offer a fitting service if you want to take your car in to them .

They still cater for classic models much further back than W201 .
