Hi Guys, I knew instantly who to ask about this - a friend of mine has approached me asking about this car:

1990 190e Cosworth 2.5L 16v

he said it's in pretty good condition - it needs a new boot lid but looks to be sound everywhere else and he's looking for £1500 for it...

I thought that sounds an average price - but I don't know enough about it to know if it's a good price or not really - I do know some go for more than that, but I guess it's condition etc which plays a major part.

Ideas?

As you say yourself , it all depends on conditon , originality etc .

You'll get a better idea over on http://www.mercedes190.co.uk which specialises in the W201 and is the best site for info on these models .

I think the important question is, do you really want a £1500 Cosworth?

That kind of money will get you an average car, £4500 will get you a nice one. The difference will be obvious. I think the "problem" with W210s, like W124s, is that once you have one you become aware of what a good car they are and you hanker for a better one

Hi Jade,

£1500 is way too cheap for a worthwhile 'Cosworth', that's roughly what the breakers go for. It's either going to be the bargain of the century or a money pit, IMHO. Good ones fetch at least three times that. Realistically for an excellent example without faults and with sensible mileage/mint interior/body etc you're looking at £6/7k+. Specialist dealers with nicer still ones will ask for even more, and I know for certain of a ultra-low mileage example that was up for £16k and has sold in the last few weeks.

Any more details or pictures? Value would depend on a number of things - specification, mileage, service history, colour, transmission type, body/interior/mechanical condition, etc.

I wouldn't bother with a cheap one these days as many of the bits are getting harder/more expensive to get hold of and the difference between good ones and tatty examples is wider than ever. Buy a good one to start with, look after it and you'll be a happy owner. Buy a tatty one and you'll spend ££££s on it, and it'll never be as good as a nice original example.

If your friend is looking more seriously at this car and needs some advice on things to look for/check I'm happy to help where I can :)
