It's been for sale on PistonHeads for a while and is now on ebay.

Original PH advert: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/934553.htm

It alot cheaper than the MCP Motorsport Evo II, or, indeed, any Evo II for sale on mobile.de.....and there's a reason for this. It was subject to a Cat C insurance claim in 2002. However then seller doesn't mention this in either adverts.

Despite that, it's a lovely example with a decent spec and that wonderful half leather interior. It needs the standard grill, though IMO :)

Any idea what the damage was to make it a Cat C?

4 yers ago i was looking for part my and i end up in South Wales and ther was 190e EVO 2 was ther damge .... i had 190e evo1...had damge cat d ...i send to cyprus

He has just sent me an email saying that the car has no accident damage!!!

Dunno about that massive front splitter, is that original spec?

It doesn't appear to be on all of them, so maybe it was an option.
However the splitter is missing the two "support" bars. That's the best way I can describe them, but have a look at this photo, then the advert again and hopefully you'll see what I mean! :o

could have been water/fire damage making it cat C rather than accident as such? still a bit naughty. How do you know its defo cat C?

never ever seen one before - its a bit 'marmite!'

I emailed the seller about the Cat C, and he came back with this response:

Ebay Seller said:
Hi Darren,

I have a hpip report that says its clear but from 2002, so must have been put on v car afterwards.

I have spoken to the previous owner, a collector, who said, someone went into the car on the passenger side, it was a very minor scrape on cross roads.

The only reason it was put on hpi was that the evo 2 kit is no longer available, hence no insurance company could approve a repair.

He sourced a new arch from Germany and that as the only damage. I have been over the car with a local bodyshop manager, and they have confirmed no issues with chassis or anything else.

The car is immaculate and drives spot on! it will be a great buy for someone.

Thanks

Darren

He should have mentioned that in the advert.

TBH most of these older fast cars have had some paintwork/repaints in the past, very difficult to find those without.

Would they still write off an expensive Merc over a scrape? Could the insurance company not source the arch like the previous owner did from MB themselves?

Sounds a reasonable response to me and yes I suspect that they would write it off if they couldn't source the kit and at the end of the day, I suspect that it was the easy option for the Insurance company to write it off and for the owner to buy it back and get it repaired at his expense and within his own time.

I was interested in this vehicle, but the seller stated a different version of damage. It had a new front wing, bumper and bonnet which indicates a slightly more serious impact than the seller would let us believe.

If anyone is seriously interested i would want to see some pics of the damage prior to repair and have the vehicle inspected prior to completing purchase.

I think the seller is taking the **** not stating this in the listing as i believe this is a vital bit of info for any potential purchaser.

w201's, w124's etc don't require a material shunt to end up needing a new wing, bonnet and bumper....w201's in particular are extremely fragile at the front end. If you hit a modern car whilst in a w201, likelihood is you'll cause plenty of damage to your own ar and none to the other, as most modern cars have high end rear bumpers...work their way through the front end of a 190 very nicely !

Agreed, it could be something material, but equally it could have been something very minor and of no relevance to the integrity of the car. It'd be a shame to miss an opportunity for something which might not have any relevance - at least here there is info on what has been done.

If it's of any interest to prospective buyers, the current owner (and seller) of this vehicle is a member over on another forum (190 based) AFAIK.

The general story is that he bought it to make a quick buck (came from storage apparantly). I'm not sure what his margin is though. It's been on Pistonheads for several weeks now at various prices, and the last eBay auction was ended early.

I've no idea why he blacked out the grille insert (?), it wasn't like this when he originally bought it.

It really is a bit naughty though not to mention that this car (however nice it may be) is an insurance write-off. Probably affects it's value to quite a degree IMHO.

That fact alone (not so much the fact that it's a write off, but the fact that he's hiding it) would put me off.

Will, agree, it's a bit naive not to mention it - guess it's a bit of catch 22, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Bit like the 'basket-case' 500e...good car to buy for keeps, not one to make a quick buck on.

I'm always keen to see such cars go to enthusiasts rather than for-profit buyers.

if the seller had thought it through a bit more thoroughly, he would have realised that prospective buyers of such specialised vehicle would uncover whatever he is trying to hide ..

hiding the bad bits of the history just makes him shifty and untrustworthy .. someone you would not want to do business with
