Hello All,

I am new to this site but not new to Mercedes ownership. I have a 190e 2.0 auto. I recently bought it and the previous owner advised that he replaced all the seals including the rocker cover gasket. He said it was running fine but on test drive it would not accelerate well and was making a popping sound under the bonnet. Whilst on the test drive we went into a Mercedes specialist we saw who said it was an air leak and not to worry. We in the end came to an agreement to purchase it at a seriously knocked down price so very little risk. I drove it back from Coventry to Huddersfield and it was an exemplary car whilst cruising or under acceleration but when ever I had the slow down or even stop it would run really rough and then take an age to accelerate, make the popping sound judder and then accelerate well. Tick over is pretty poor too. I have checked all over for an air leak and can hear one along the spark plug area like a train chugging fast. Otherwise there are no smoke issues, water and oil are clean and the temp stays cool. Anyway thanks for reading and any help would be gratefully received.

You'll have to get the air cleaner housing off and check all around for missing, degraded hoses and pipes. Also, all of the exhaust system.

The "tissue test" is a good move, if you can stop the viscous fan with some thick gloves on, make sure it's a viscous one before trying!

Good luck and welcome from another "newbie". :)

Do yourself a big favour and have a vacuum test carried out. I'd recommend it's carried out with smoke machine as there's plenty of vacuum tubing and just as importantly connectors too.

The symptoms you have reported also remind me of a failing OVP reply.

The 2.0l has an electromagnetic fan clutch.
