what is the benefit in replacing the steering idler (looks like a shock absorber!) does this make the steering feel heavier / stiffer if faulty ? :)

Removes quite a lot of vibration and shock from the steering without removing feel. The power assistance overcomes any slight extra resistance. A new one makes the car much pleasanter to drive. Quite an easy DIY.

The ball joint between the hub and the lower wishbone can also ruin the steering feel. To check, with the front end lifted, temporarily disconnect the track rod end, and swivel the hub as if steering by hand. It should move quite freely. When the ball joints get really bad, they start squeaking and squealing as you steer, but, sometimes, they can stay quiet.

thx for info, found out noise /creaking was the strut top mounts not lower ball joints as first thought may well change steering idler as matter of coarse cheers again!
