Hello all, I have recently purchased a 1986 190e which had some electrical probs, most of which I have now sorted apart from the electric sunroof and rear heated screen, I read that there is a manual winding mechanisim for the sunroof located near the back of the car, possibly in the boot although I have yet to find this (this was on a USA forum) , I have already replaced the aerial (passenger side) and repaired the petrol cap central locking solenoid (drivers side) both of which require removal of plastic panels from either side of the boot. Still no sign of this supposed mecanism though....

It might be worth noting that both the sunroof and screen switches on the dash seem to be wired properly althouth they will not stay in the `on` posotion

Has anyone had the same problem?

If so how did you get around it?

Hello and welcome mate.

On my 190 the mechanism can be accesed through a little flap just above the nearside(pasenger side) wheelarch, in the boot. There's a little white knob that you can turn to open or close the roof.

Mine is a later model but i dont see why the roof motor should be in a different position. Though you never know.

As for the switches, daft question i know but, have you tried the fuses or relays?(if they have them, relays, that is.) Oh and they dont stay clicked in the on position. The heated screen is timed to go off after a while but you can overide this by clicking it off whenever you want.

Hope this helps.

Also you might like this site,mercedes190.com Its a nice uk site dedicated to the 190. :)

Many thanks for that. i'll give it a go at the weekend as am sorting out a boot leak.

Good luck in sorting the boot leak. My previous car, also a 1986 190E also had problems with water ingress into the boot area. Turned out to be rusting bodywork directly below the rear window, I never really got it fully sorted before selling the car as it would have been an expensive job.

eeeek! dont like the sound of that!

Things actually seem ok below the window as the carpet covering the fuel tank is bone dry and there are no signs of moisture around this area, the water gathers in bootlid and then pours out of the hole where the small lightbulb is when you fully open the boot.

its all a bit of a mystery at the moment....

I have read that very problem many times before. Mine did it once and has never repeated since  I myself think it comes in through where the star bolts through the boot lid but ive never bothered to investigate.

I didnt think of that, one thing that occured to me was that it might be coming in where the spoiler is attached as there is some very slight bubbling of the paintwork, again will be delving further at the weekend

thanks Stwat, I found the sunroof motor and gave it a couple of turns and got some nice non-creaky movement from the sunroof, more to do at the weekend!!

Thanks again for all the tips folks, I'll let you know how I get on...

Another common way for water to get into the boot of a 190E is through a perished rubber seal around the boot lock (the chrome barrel that pushes in to open).
