Stoopid question - what does the S stand for on the auto gearbox on this car?

Thanks

Joseph

I am pretty sure its stands for 'sport' - a sports driving mode, allows the car to pull of in lower gear ratio and to accelerate faster in lower gear,as opposed to pulling of in 2nd,as is the norm in the 'c',or comfort mode - but I am sure someone will come along soon to give some expert advise.

The automatic 'box on a W108 was long before the two mode boxes first seen on the likes of W201 and W124 models .

The 'S' you refer to must be the one as in P R N D S L : Park , Reverse , Neutrtal , Drive , Slope , Low .

The first three letters are self explanatory .

Drive allows forward gears to be selected automatically with all four forward gears available ; the car normally starts in second with first only used if kickdown applied from standstill .

Slope - as Drive above but with 4th gear locked out - so named as it is useful for descending slopes and allows the use of engine braking to hold the car back .

Low - only first and second gears available ; in this position the car will start off in first even with light pressure on the accelerator .

Glad I didn't answer the OP then.. and waited for someone with the right info. ;)

Out of curiosity , Joseph , is yours a floor change or column change automatic ?

How about posting some pictures ?

Genius - thanks for both replies!! Its a floor change - will take some pics and post them soon

This has answered a newby's first question..

Gawd I love forums like this...

I have just bought a 1972 w108 280 se (under guidance from a classic MB expert) as wifey is expecting number 2, and I was under orders to trade in the two door classic for "Something more practical" ;-)

My first question on joining this forum was exactly this... so I feel vindicated in joining already!

It would be good to get an idea who else on here has a similar aged car..?

Thanks

Ben
