Afternoon MBClub,

Currently having a go at getting my old merc ready for my upcoming wedding, and had a few question re. bodywork which im hoping you guys can help. My level of knowledge isn't the best I must admit, but i'm ok with instructions :)

Car in question is here (link to my introduction topic)

Apologies that the pic below isn't ideal, but i'll take some more and post them up. The car looks to have had a respray in the late 90s so paint work is overall, in pretty decent condition, but the bottoms of the doors have started to show signs of rust again...question is best way to tackle this?

I'm guessing this rust is from water leaking into the bottom of the door (throught the window) and settling there.
I'm thinking of :-
- taking off the interior door trim, and then pouring wax oil (or similar) into there, after freeing up the drainage holes at the bottom of the door.
- Before I do this...what's best way to tackle the rust at the bottom? sandy down (by hand), apply rust treatment, fill, primer, and spray? Would have to do all this myself as I don't have much £££ to spend on getting someone else to do it, unless you know someone who will be willing to do this on the cheap in the Midlands? :)

Paint Matching
===========
:dk:
Not sure if this is the original paint, and im unaware of paint codes...so what is the best way to match the paint...are there any places that will be able to mix me up some paint if I supplied them say..the petrol cap cover by removing it off the car?

Anyone removed the interior door trim before, simple enough, anything I need to watch out for?

Few bits and bobs to sort on this car, couple of engine/carb issues which im getting help from in another thread :p great forum, great info....hope im here for many years to come.

Thanks people,
Harry.

Hi , I learned to drive in a very similar car , which was my dad's from new , then given to me after I passed my test in it ! My car was also a 220/8 , but 1970 , manual with column gear change and red MB Tex interior .

This car ( pictured below ) was also white - I've been looking for the data card but can't find it - however my best guess as to the paint code would have been DB 050 which is plain old 'White' .

Your car looks basically sound and I hope you manage to get it running without too much trouble .

Most of these would have been taken when the car was only a few years old

I can also provide links to parts specialists , both here in the UK and in Germany if you need them .

loved the old photos, how mad were those fog lights!! could you imagine havin them now, loved the shot with sl in did you know whos it was

great photo's!

thanks for the info, speaking of data cards, I think I have them! Car came with Full service history also...so she's a keeper. Thanks i'll have a look into whether I can see the paintcode on the datacard.

The paint code is certainly on the data card - look for the word 'Lack'

Yes - my mum's !

How good it must have been getting dropped to school in that,we had an ex ambulance 3.0 granada I died a death every day,the 999 jokes never ending

It was even better DRIVING it to school in 6th year :D Although I only got to a couple of times .

Thing was , school was only 200 yds away , just round the corner .

It had to be done as one of my mates got to take his dad's 230SL !

We also had a Mk 1 3 litre Granada - same metallic bronze as the one in 'The Sweeney' - most of my mates liked that better than either of the Mercs - no accounting for taste !

your approach to tackling the rust is one that will work. it's time consuming but in the end you can be sure it's done correctly. I've used POR15 on my doors and once dry, ensured all was sealed up as crap does get stuck and we know what happens then

Glasurit paint colours for Mercedes in 1972 were;

White, code 652
Light Ivory, code 670
Pappyrus, Code 717
Pastelwhite, Code 131
White, code 050.

I suspect it's just plain white, 050.

Guys, thanks for all the info so far...any idea where I can get the paint from. Is it still available from dealers, or anyone have any suggestions of where I can get hold of the paint?

btw, great photo's pontoneer :thumb: I too would love to get myself an SL to complete the set...I was saying to my dad only the other day that I'd like a white SL too...in fact I was suggesting he should buy it :p

So, track down some paintwork and a few hours in the garage looks like :)
