Hi All

I am a classic car (and Mercedes) novice. I’ve recently been vaguely contemplating a 450 slc and so have read up a little on these.

A 280 slc has just popped up that I am finding myself drawn to. There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of info that I can find on the 280 and how it compares to the 450 so I was just wondering if the forum might be able to share any views on what to look out for with these and any views on the car generally ?

I’d also be interested to hear of any London based classic merecedes specialists you might know of for the purposes of a pre purchase inspection.

thanks a lot

Holford Motors (Hornchurch). The owners (Paul & Shef) are trust worthy and were trained on those cars. Can't recommend them more highly.

Any r107 slc is a beautiful car but the straight six 280 may be a bit lacking in torque compared to the V8's. Drove a friends 450slc around for a while and the V8's really are a bit special but as with all old cars buy on condition so if the 280slc you are looking at is relatively rust free with good original paint then go for it.

As I understand it the big issue with any R107 (SL or SLC) is hidden rust e.g.

Hows your German? seriously- lots of video on the sl/slc on YouTube as to what to look for. Body condition is paramount!!!!

Also worth bearing in mind that r107 slc's have been cheap-ish old cars for a long time in the UK. It is only recently they have attracted higher asking prices, like any old car now it seems, so many have been unloved for a long time. Beware shiny new paint unless backed up by a comprehensive photo restoration would be my advice.

Classic metal well on the rise at the mo, and a great time to buy IMHO as there’s still some relative bargains to be had. 2030 in some peoples sights already.

My mate has a 450 in his garage and has only driven it 500 miles in the last 20 years. When the ulez comes in his clk daily is going to the scrapper and the 450 is going to be the daily just to stick it to Khan :)
