1982 280ce Cutting out, ran out of fuel!

Hello, My Mercedes 280ce keeps cutting out. Basically I ran out of fuel and then it keeps starting for a few hundred meters and then cutting out, where it used to idle it now dies. What's the best thing to do? It goes as it should once started, but then when it dies it takes a while to start.

Please let me know what the best solution is.

Hi Mercx, i'm no expert, but i'd be inclined to run a system cleaner through, something like BG44K just in case there's some crud that got through: Power Enhancer | BG44k | Petrol Engine Cleaners | Fuel Injector Cleaner

May also be worth giving it a service if it's due one.

I bought mine from kwik fit, they have them behind the counter in the reception area.

I take it this is a W123 Coupe ?

If the fuel filter has not been changed in a while , this may be worth doing .

You may have inadvertently sucked a load of crud from the tank when you ran it dry .

The filter is underneath , along with the electric fuel pump .

The filter will be something like a tenner , but beware of the pipes around it : if they are rusty and need replacing they can be eye wateringly expensive , for what they are .
