Problems... I have to turn the key a few times to hear the fuel pump buzz.. Took her for a spin, pulls really well on the flat but as soon as she starts climbing a hill if just loses power.. Not misfiring or anything, just feels like it's pulling a house behind her..
Thinking it might be the fuel pump given it takes a few goes to get the pump buzzing... Or could it be the relay.?

What colour is the inside of the tailpipe? Also worth having a look at the plugs to see if its been running very lean.

Plugs were shot, changed those..
Think it must be fuel, given the intermittent non priming of fuel pump..???

Fuel pump relay probably*. Lack of power means lack of fuel possibly down to a choked fuel filter or tank outlet.
* they can often be repaired by opening the can and resoldering the small PCB inside to remove dry joints

Removed fuel relay..
Can I bridge the relevant sockets of the relay plug to test if the relay is at fault.?
If so, which two particular sockets would I use..
Thanks.

I'd expect under-fuelling to show as misfires/backfires.
Having encountered a gutless (more than usual) W123 200 that had its ignition timed to TDC, I'd check the timing first. Simple to do, at least eliminate it as a possibility.

230 and not 230E right? If so does it have a mechanical fuel pump?
You might have rust in the tank, this would build up around the strainer and would result in the system not being able to feed the pump quickly enough when the engine is under load. It will behave fine at idle and fine when you first get going because there is fuel in the line but eventually cause low fuel flow.

I'm not convinced fuel starvation is the issue. Sounds more like the timing is not advancing, so could be out, or a vacuum leak? Being an E, have you set the airflow plate height?
