Hi Will,

having seen you have had many of these (cosworths) whats your take on the them regards to the upkeep and maintenance...

not to mention if it was something like this one the restoration required?

I saw a silver 2.5 auto go in auction for just under £4,500 and was kicking myself but I would be gutted if I got it and it needed a load of cash then to be thrown at it to get it up to a decent standard:

1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E Cosworth 2.5 16 AUTO - Classic Car Auctions

pictures can often hide ALOT! as I have learned...

Thanks
Raj

Hi Raj,

That 2.5 Auto went really cheap IMHO. I didn't know about that auction and I suspect a lot of other potential buyers would have missed it too.

Personally looking at the pictures and details including the head rebuild I would say it could achieve probably another £3-4K over the auction sale price if marketed/advertised better. Most 16v 190Es for less than £5k are pretty rough, restoration cases mainly, where as that one looks like a fairly tidy car?

Most will need work nowadays and it all depends on your outlook/budget/DIY skills.

Bodywork can be expensive. Mechanical work is relatively straightforward although some of the 16v specific parts are getting hard to come buy and expensive these days. I guess this is like any old/classic Merc though - if you are paying for specialists/Bodyshop rates then it all adds up.

You are right however that even though that car looks tidy you just don't know what it really needs. It may have needed thousands spending on it - you just don't know without having seen it. Having said that though I still reckon it was a bargain for someone and even if you spent another few ££££ on it I doubt you'd lose out in the long run :)

The 2.3-16 in this thread clearly needs a lot of work - full restoration. You wouldn't take it on unless you were doing a lot of the work yourself or unless you really wanted to restore one as a project. As with most restorations like this the finances rarely stack up and most people do it as a labour of love.

Having said that, values of these cars are only going one way, collectors are taking interest and and they've become a pretty rare sight on the roads in recent years. Every year a few more get broken for spares/damaged/rust away so the supply/demand issue is likely to continue IMHO.

That was not a bad cosworth
It went for £17,500

Hi Will this is the one being referred to :

Mercedes 190E 2.5 Cosworth 1990 - South Western Vehicle Auctions Ltd

now that a lot of money for a cossie someone got caught up in the moment there I think lol

Where would you get another similar?

It was worth approx £6-7k ten years ago. There's far less available like that one now (not that there was too many in the first place) and the vast majority of classic cars have risen in value, especially over the past five years. It seems to me the buyer knew exactly what they doing.

Allowing £2k for the plate, I think he is only a couple of grand over and that will be gone in the next 2-3 years. Good "Cossies" wll be £20k plus by 2020.

I hanker after a Chevette 2300 HS.... could get them for £6k not so long ago.

Recently saw one for £30k... and to be honest its not that mad of a price.

Yep, it might be at the top for the car but you are right to allow for the plate, useless anyway as it wouldn't go any faster or handle any better with it. :D

That car does need a bit of worth on the engine bay (it's very original looking) and a few parts could do with a clean up or replacing then again nothing that a day's work and few hundred quid wouldn't sort.

If the car is as good as it looks, I can see a classic car 'emporium' getting it tip top condition and looking for a decent profit.

2300HS, £30k? Totally understandable as it's got pedigree and there's sod all for sale. If somebody wants one why not...

crazy prices now for cosworths makes you wish you should have bought 2 when they were selling for 3-5k!

hindsight is a wonderful thing
