1985 280SL....One of the best, I promise! Price Reduction

Update: 13th March 2006

Hi, I've reduced the price on my 280SL to offers arround the £9k mark...previously I was looking for nearer £10k. Really is a stunning car and compared to others I have seen, many of which have got bodywork that is starting to go, this car really does offer value for money, as the bodywork and mechanicals are A1.

Hi,

I'm selling a 1985 280SL Auto which was registered in April 1985.

Car is Signal Red with Black Soft Top and a Signal Red Hard Top and has done 92,100 miles

The interior is Black MB Tex with Black Check cloth inserts.

Car is fitted with "Mexican Hat" style alloys, Electric Windows, and Pioneer CD Player.

In my opinion this 280SL is in well above average condition....If I was to tell you that the car was sold 3 years ago this June by well know Mercedes Specialist, Peter Jarvis for £13,700 I hope this kind of demonstrates the quality of the car, as Peter Jarvis is not known for selling "average" SL's.

Its also interesting to note that a previous seller of the car was Silver Arrows Automobiles, again another Mercedes dealer that is renowned for selling only the very best.

In the last 4 years the car has covered very little in the way of mileage due to work commitments and lack of spare time

To confirm this the MOT's run as follows;

2002: 89,047 miles
2003: 91,387 miles
2004: 91,760 miles
Car was then declared SORN
New Mot on February 13th 2006....mileage 92,036

In fact I have MOT's back to 1998 when the mileage was 64,251, so as you can see its not been heavily used in the last 8 years.

I also have the Service Book which shows that the car was originally sold by:

Mill Garages Ltd the Mercedes main agents in Sunderland.

1st Service: Inspection service @ 1058 miles
2nd Service: @ 6441 miles by Mill Garages on 11/9/85
3rd Service: @ 12307 miles by Normand Mercedes Bristol on 22/8/86
4th Service: @ 23,210 miles by Normand Mercedes Bristol 21/10/88
5th Servuce: @ 28,429 miles by Lancaster Mercedes Hertford 18/5/90
6th Service: @ 33,342 miles by Lancaster Mercedes Hertford 27/8/91
7th Service: @ 39,697 miles by Autron Garages London 26/7/93
8th Service: @ 43,960 miles by Emerald Auto's London 16/10/94
9th Service: @ 53,478 miles by Parkgate Auots London 16/7/96
10th Service:mad: 65,481 miles by Silver Arrows Automobiles June 98
11th Service:mad: 73,234 miles by Alan Day Mercedes London 26/8/99
12th Service @ 78,795 miles by Alan Day Mercedes London 04/8/00
13th Servuce @ 81,491 miles by Alan Day Mercedes London 18/4/01

The vehicle was then fully serviced by Peter Jarvis just prior to sale in 2003 when the mileage was 91,000 odd miles and since then the car has travelled just under 1000 miles and during this time its had an oil change and has been kept garaged.

Its also worth noting that the car has had the following items changed in the last 30,000 miles

Complete Exhaust system at 67,000 miles...supplied and fitted By Mercedes Western Automobiles-in Edinburgh

New Prop Shaft Coupling at 73,000 miles + transmission oil change + all Belts + front and rear pads + fuel filter

New Spark Plug leads +cap @ 74,000

New Electric Aerial @ 76,000 miles

New Mercedes supplied and fitted Radiator (Alan Day) @ 81,491 miles

So all in all the car has been correctly serviced through out its life and its also received a number of costly new wear and tear items such as exhaust, radiator etc, which I hope will provide some comfort in terms of future costs in running this car.

Bodywork

In a nutshell its honestly immaculate.....not a rust bubble in sight and gleaming red paintwork on all panels...no scratches and no annoying parking dinks in the side panels.

All chrome is in A1 condition and at some stage the alloys have been refurbished and are still in excellent condition....Tyres by the way also have plenty of tread on them.

Under the bonnet, everything is very clean and oil tight.

Hard Top is unmarked with a nice clean head lining

On the Road

Car drives straight and true with not a rattle, squeak or knock to be heard. Good performance from the 190bhp 2.8 Straight Six Twin Cam, which as you all probably know is a bullet proof engine capable of covering huge mileages before any remidial work is needed....Oil pressure is 3 whenever the car is on the move and even after a motorway journey the pressure remains just over 2 at standstill in gear.

Water Temp.....never gets hot....you have the new radiator to thank for that.

Auo Box...changes are nice and smooth.

All electrics work + Central Locking etc

Interior

As you may know the drivers seat side bolster tends to wear on many Mercedes, be they SL's or W124 etc. This car has no visable wear and the cloth inserts are unmarked and unworn as are the carpets.

Car is fitted with rear seats, which again are unworn.

Hood

Perfect condition.....Black in colour.

Pricing

Bearing in mind, that this SL cost £13,750 three years ago and has only covered less than 1000 miles since and must be considered one of the very best of the 6 cylinder SL's, I am looking for offers arround the £9950 mark....I think that this represents real value for money and hopefully it will necessitate a quick sale for me and a very good deal for you.

So with Spring just around the corner (although today may not feel like that) and whilst I hate to use this phrase which I'm going to anyway.... "get yourself a bargain"......I'm in Reading and can be contacted on 07830 321060.

I was going to do some fresh photos with my new digital camera today, but its been snowing, windy, rainy etc etc, so I will hopefully have some Photos for you later this week.....let me know if you want me to send you some.

Proceeds of sale will go towards the engine rebuild on my W124 AMG Hammer:p
