1986 R107 300SL exhaust options

I've been told that the exhaust on my R107 is leaking and needs to be replaced. The initial quote I've received is for the original (non-catalytic converter) MB replacement exhaust and the price including fitting is in excess of 1,000 pounds. :confused:

Do any forum members have any advice on where a cheaper exhaust can be sourced? I don't think these cars had catalytic converters, but can someone also kindly confirm that?
 
Hi Jaymanek, thanks for the tip. I was told that i need to replace the entire exhaust, so I'll check with the mechanic if the back bit only would be of use. Given that you are selling yours, have you gone the stainless steel route as well? How would it compare to the original (pros/cons)?
 
Jaymanek, I just saw your gallery - each car you've listed has unique appeal, it is a really nice collection. Do you personally own all of these cars or are they inventory?

Those are my cars not for sale..

I replaced my entire system with a genuine brand new Mercedes System only because I had a hole in my centre section.
The back box was perfect though.
 
As a long term investment on a "Classic Benz" a stainless steel system is an attractive and cheaper FIT AND FORGET option. It may also be a good selling point after a few years. Stainless steel systems tend to "ring/resonate" a bit especially when new and some owners don't like that. IF YOU GO DOWN THE ST/ST ROUTE CHOOSE YOUR FITTER/SUPPLIER CAREFULLY
 
I did not opt for stainless for some reasons:

- The sound isnt the same
- The look isnt the same
- If ever selling, buyers look for originality with classic cars
- Original exhaust is perfect for the car
- Original exhaust will last 30 years on average

The original exhausts were made by eberspacher and can still be sourced by Euro, GSF etc last time i checked.

Jaymanek, it is hard to pick a favourite from your cars - each one is so different from the next and all are meticulous, it's a pleasure watching your album. I will look up the websites you've recommended. The ultimate decision will have to be based on a cost/benefit ratio as the car a number of other issues that need to be addressed as well to get it to an acceptable standard.
