Hello all. Please could you help me with a dilemma? Original post removed for advertising, sorry, it was not my intent to “advertise” the car for sale – I need advice please.

I need advice regarding a Feb 1987 D reg. 500 SEL – approx.. 125k miles – no MOT – it’s currently a non-runner. The original 5L engine was knocking on the bottom end so has been replaced with a good condition 5.6L engine, this has been installed and mated to the original auto gearbox, (gearbox reconditioned) The original engine (and wheels) are still with the car.

The problems are; the engine has literally been put into the car and not connected up in any way, it just sits in it’s bay. There are parts left over from the engine swap but I have no idea where to start…

Do I try and sell it “as is”, if so what’s it worth? Or do I find a specialist (if one exists) to finish it off and get it running again and then sell it, what would it be worth then and what would be the cost to get it running again?

Thanks in advance. I’ll try and post up some pictures.

Try a Edward Hall .. they service and sell plenty W126s.

Thank you, I’ll contact them tomorrow 👍

And try Stevensons in Kent - I have used them many years and Steve can fix just about everything

tell him Sean - red SL400 - recommended them to you

Before you do anything engine wise I'd remove those chrome arch trims and check what's lurking beneath (and the rest of the car including the jacking points and under the rear parcel shelf) If rot has taken hold it would cost substantially more than having a engine plumbed in !

Great advice, thanks for that 👍

Ok, sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but this is no exercise for anyone but the most spanner happy W126 enthusiast. You’re looking at massive complexity, time and risk.

IMHO, your best path is to find a breaker who will be excited by the breakdown value of the car. Lots of individual components will have value to W126 owners keeping their vehicle running but struggling to find arcane S class priced bits.

I’m decades out from knowing that sector, but Silverlake in Hampshire might be a good start. Scrap Your Car At Silverlake, We Sell Recycled Auto Parts & Car Tyres. We Buy Any Vehicle, Damaged Or Not. Get an Instant Quote Or Bid In Our Twice Weekly Salvage Auctions. | Silverlake Autoparts

Others here will have better suggestions, and it may even be snapped up by an East European recycler. Internet sourcing and distribution has revolutionised this business.
