Hey guys, I recently picked up 16v as a little project/restoration car, ill be keeping everything I do in this thread
base Car
2.3 16v 190e cosworth
1988
manual
199
half leather
existing mods
evo1 wheels
lowered 40mm front, 20mm back
SLS removed
K&N air filter
euro headlight bulbs (orange tinted)
DTM Exhaust
German style plates
momo steering wheel
Good Bits
taking a quick look over the car...
interior is almost immaculate minus 1 door card starting to lift
engine runs very well
all electrics working
evo 1's
already lowered and handles very well
SLS already removed
majority of paintwork is great
Kit is in perfect condition and hasnt been cut or broken from what i can tell
spare heater + standard airbox
no spoiler rust
Bad Bits
Rust on rear arches, need replacing
Rust on boot near windscreen needs fixing
heater doesn't work as well as it should (see good bits )
Boot doesn't close properly and leaks
Gearbox seems a bit clunky
ASD whines
DTM Exhaust
Idles a bit low at 8k
Grille is missing 1 bolt...
handles/boot lock/door locks stick a bit
wing mirrors are bubbling
2nd aerial hole on other side (will be fixed with wing replacement)
stickers all over the windows and on the boot
radiator fans a bit stiff
lap timers fooked
all in all, considering what i paid for it, this was such a bargain and a great start to the project
Plans in Order
Mechanical
Get the Engine running as it should be
Get the Gearbox fixed
Recondition the Diff and get rid of the whine
make sure all the brakes/shocks/bushes etc are all good and replace if not.
Bodywork
Replace both rear arches
strip to find and remove any hidden rust and fix any leaks
fix all the sticky locks and other bits
replace any rotting/damaged/worn parts
respray any bits needed
Colour code grille + Avantgarde inserts (may even go for that shartz? grille)
new sills throughout the car just to be on the safe side for damp.
replace rear lights (currently letting in water)
remove all the stickers
then, once I have a solid car with no rust running and looking like new....
Audio
Sound deaden everything and remove any rattles and road/engine noise from the passenger cabin
Fit a custom audio system, all speakers hidden from view so it looks stock
fix (if nessasary) and refit the current interior making sure that it doesn't rattle at all.
once that's all done and I have the car sounding like I want (on the inside) ...
Cosmetic
straight through performance exhaust, with hidden downpipes behind the kit
may fit 17" Evo 2s / Oz Operas, or refurbish the current 16" (extremely good condition) Evo 1's, will do Photoshop nearer the time.
gradual tinted windows from front -> rear.
then, now its all looking, running and sounding perfect...
Nit Picking
may re-trim the interior, most probably just the cloth inserts
may relocate the air intake a little so it fits a bit better (currently resting on the hoods heat shield)
smarten up the engine bay so it looks brand new and everything fits nicely
so once i have the car looking like it came off the shop floor...
performance
I may look into performance upgrades, although from what i have heard so far, Cosworth and Mercedes have done such a great job, that unless you have money to burn, there's not much point.
Then.. all that's left is to drive it
^^ hope you like the idea, will be keeping you posted via this thread, although for the next 2 months its going no where as I have no money or garage to do the work yet lol. still not in any rush
Here's the pics of the car in its current condition.
Overview
Interior
Door card starting to life (still able to save )
