I just spotted this for sale in Italy for €69,000

Its very rare, a 6 litre 32v AMG with MANUAL conversion, most are automatic (and I say "most" but there were only about 12 built!)

I would love to buy it not least because I want to take that HIDEOUS SEC grille bonnet off it, does nothing for it! Almost as bad as the W100 600 grilles SGS Styling Garage used to fit on 1000SEL's in the '80's!

under 30,000 miles too, yummy!

Would look lovely on colour coded alloys too!

no link to me! http://www.autoscout24.eu/Details.aspx?id=242815702&cd=635270441820000000&asrc=st&a=1

I can never understand the reason to change to manual when the auto is so good in the Mercedes cars of that vintage.

Fast changing and very smooth - seamless.

The auto would be faster through the gears too - I know my E320 (1995
124 is, and confirmed in the official Merc data.

The later engine devalues the car in my eyes, as its strictly no longer a Hammer, as it needs that M117 Quad Cam engine.

It wasn't uncommon for the M117 Quad Cam engine to be swapped out with a later M119 due to lack of spares/people able to work on them.

what stunning looking car, although ive never liked that type of bonnet on the 124's

Only W124's could correctly be referred to as Hammers, both Saloons and Coupes.

Don't forget the S124 Estate...

AMG never made the estate in Hammer form.....there is an estate in the US, but this was a home built conversion using a quad cam engine from a W126 from memory.

It wasn't "home built" as it was built by AMG Central in Westmont Illinois USA.
AMG North America was owned by Richard Buxbaum and was in Westmont, Ill and was the one and the only official AMG facility for building AMG cars, and specifically AMG Hammers in the U.S.

It started life as a 1987 300TD Canadian delivered diesel.
VIN WDBEB93D7HF036603
This blue wagon was built for a wealthy Canadian named Paul Fingold, who has since passed away.

The engine was new in a crate direct from Affalterbach.
All of the 4 valve engines that they installed were built at AMG in Affalterbach, West Germany at the AMG plant, and they came complete and were installed at that facility by Hartmut Feyhl.
Hartmut worked at AMG in Germany before he moved here to work at AMG North America, so it really was like Germany being here in the U.S. with this setup. ( Feyhl went on to start RennTech in Florida and can be contacted to confirm the Estate build )

It is fully documented and currently owned by the owner of Blue Ridge MB in Georgia.

I'm familiar with this car as it was one of three Hammers (W124, C124, S124 ) owned by ex-BHMA employee, Aaron Ruskin. I tried to purchase the W124 in 2008 but couldn't agree on price. He was asking $65K, I offered $49K.
The C124 and S124 sold in 2010 at a Barrett Jackson auction.
The W124 eventually sold this January for $51850.00 on EBAY.

Westmont also built a 6.0L SOHC Estate that was referred to as a "Mallet" in a February 1990 Car & Driver magazine article. This is another well known build that is currently for sale.

Keep in mind that AMG appointed franchised dealers that assembled the various builds with parts from AMG Germany.
These builds can't be negated as they are as "AMG" as a German build.

Applying your same logic then any build done by Stratton's was not a true pre-merger AMG.

Ah, go on there Ed! :D A non Affalterbach classic AMG is akin to buying a Ferrari that's been made in Mexico. :p ;)

And then there is AMG Japan who did many rare official specials
