Hi all,

I have an 1989 230te auto, when gear limiter 2 is selected it starts in gear 1 (as normal according to the manual) but it just holds the gear regardless of throttle position and it wont change up until you bury the throttle into the floor (kickdown) and it hits the rev limiter @ 6000 then changes up to gear 2... is this normal or do I have a problem?

Cheers

Paul

No, you do not have a problem.

The car is designed to pull away in 2nd unless you bury the throttle at takeoff, this makes it pull away in first as you describe.

Try the 3rd gear lockdown position.

Hi lookskyward1,

The one thing I cant understand is why it go's to the redline before changing up why wont it just change up at 3000 rpm or something.

yours still confused!

Paul

If you use kickdown (bury the throttle) the car is going to redline in every gear before changing up. If you are locked down to 3rd the car should change up smoothly at much lower revs.

To be honest I can't see any need to lock the box down to 2nd except in very exceptional circumstances.Hope this helps.

I have PMd you and sorry for that delay - for the benefit of others here is my view on your 'problem'.

With the S/E switch at S, the car will move off in second gear and hold that gear, unless you floor it (activate kickdown).

With the S/E switch at E, the car will move off in second gear and hold it, kickdown activation will have no effect while switch at E.

So I am not sure your description in your original posting is accurately describing actual performance, may I suggest that you repeat the test with the above in mind. But I do not think you have a problem.

PS: We have either different Owner's Manuals or we read them different ;)
