I got to a figure of £40,687. That's quite impressive, and clearly paid for quality, judging by the condition of the car today.
I'm guessing estates cost more than saloons (I based by price on saloon+self levelling suspension, and rounded it down to get a base price of £33,800. (I know that in 1993 a 320TE was 34,800, but in 1992 Car Tax was abolished, so that would have knocked over £2000 off the pre-VAT price)
For comparison a Peugeot 205 GTi was £9835.
And in 1990 the economy was in recession. House prices were falling. The average UK house cost about £88,000. I seem to remember at the time I earned about £65 a week, which is about £3,000 a year!
