I have just had the cylinder head gasket replaced on my wifes 1993 2ltr 190E at 105000miles ,I decided to have a new Mercedes OE duplex timing chain kit fitted while the job was being done, after completion of the job there is a whine form the timing chain area, not excessive but noticable enough to hear when driving the car, spoiling what was a really quiet engine, I told the motor engineer who did the job that it sounded as if the chain was too tight, he agreed that it was the timing chain making the noise and said the chain tension was controled by the oil pressure which was heathyly high, so could not be adjusted, and asked me if I would run the car for 400 miles to let the chain run in, he said he was 90 percent sure it would quieten down, but if it was no better or got worse, he would strip it down to try and find the problem, can anybody tell me if this is normal, I dont want to risk engine damage
Thanks

He needs to take the chain tensioner out and refit it properly.
It must be fitted properly.

He needs to fit the carrier first then the tensioner, which can be awkward as it needs real pressure to press against the spring.

The tensioner has to be in the first click.....

IMHO it shouldnt be driven at all. if the tension is wrong that could cause failure.....

Thank You
I will take the car back to him, and inform him of this,

STOP DRIVING THE CAR IMMEDIATELY and get it towed to the garage.

It will snap the camshaft in two - at big cost.

Obviously not a Merc specialist.

You need to take it to a Merc specialist and get the original person to pay for it. It should not take long and not cost much.

You need the tensioner removed and refitted the proper way, that's all.

But do NOT drive it.

Took the car back to the garage this afternoon after my wife complained that the temperature was getting high whilst idling in traffic again, the tappets have also got noisier, just like they were when the head gasket failed, told the engineer your advice about the tensioner, he's checking it out, and one way or another he's going to have to sort it

Thanks again Gents for your advice

Tappet problem after 190E head gasket replacement

After having the head stripped, the mechanic is telling me now that because the hydraulic tappets have been disturbed at 105000 miles, the only way he can stop them rattling is to replace them all, has anyone ever come accross this problem, or could it be that the guy who stripped the head to skim it has not put them back in the right order, this chap bear in mind does a lot of engine engineering work for local garages and should know better,

As far as I am aware thats a load of hogwash. Sounds like he is covering his backside.

I would second that

Depends if the tappets and cam followers were all placed back in the same positions as before.
Probably the tappets are stuck due to not being used for a while. Really they should have been cleaned out before re-use.

You might be lucky and a flush with flushing oil might free them off.

I WOULD LISTEN TO THIS ADVICE! NOT YOUR LOCAL MECHANIC WHO GOT IT WRONG IN THE FIRST PLACE.... BUT PERHAPS YOU'LL LEARN THE HARD WAY, COS' THAT'S THE ONLY WAY SOME PEOPLE LEARN.
