1993 E220
I have a 220 E w124 with 35 k miles. When
I drive it over extnded periods uphill etc at high revs and turn engine off, engine will not restart with key ignition. I have to let it cool down or roll start car in 2nd gear. Cannot figure out what problem is.

Does the engine turn over?

What do you mean tun over? If i try to start it with the key it just wont even try to start. If I roll the car and jump start it with clutch on second gear, it starts.

What do you think it is?

No, sometimes when problem occurs it will not turn over. Only roll start or let it ool for a while and it will start. After that happens, you sometimes get a faint backfire on exhaust when going downhill.

Sounds like starter motor???

You think it could be fixed or simply replace? Why would it fail when it heats up?

Thanks

Could be a dodgy inhibitor switch on the gear selector mechanism? It's designed so you can't start the car unless its in neutral or park. The backfire may be because of unburnt fuel in the exhaust. If your engine gearbox mounts are shot I guess it might just position the gearbox out of position relative the selector slot?? Can't really explain the heat thing otherwise except that the starter motor may be getting hot with the engine and partially seizing up as WG M-B suggests. Easy to change and about £130 exchange from EUROCARPARTS.

Yes, the mechanic recently said that engine and gear box mounts need to be changed, they were causing a weird rattling noise at around 2800 rpm on second and third gear.

I will do that to see if that stops backfire. Also change starter engine.
