1993 IR key re-programable?

Can the early IR keys be re-programed? My uncle has lost his 1993 W140 500SE key but I have a spare one. The key is the single button IR type. If we buy a used key can we reprgram the internals and just cut a new actual key for it? I know the new smart keys can't be re-programed but I'm not sure about these? Thanks

afaik yes - just open door, double zap the IR reciever (usually rear view mirror) then unlock steering to pos II, then off then on again, then start...


but you have a spare one? spare for your car Im guessing?

Thanks Guy! Yes when I said spare key I meant another one button IR key that was purchased from Mercedes as we only bought the car with one key . But keys back then were £60, they're now apparently £120?!
