1995 C180 - which oil to use?

Just wanting your thoughts on which oil I should be using in the above, which I purchased last weekend. I've seen some places say 10/40w, others 5/40w.

Also, I'm not entirely sure what is in it just now (neither is the previous owner). Will I cause problems if I put say, 10/40w when the existing oil is 5/40w? The dipstick is just about down to the lower threshold so I'm keen to add some more soon.

Either will be fine and yes it's OK to mix them.

Personally the decision on 5/40 or 10/40 comes down to what's on-offer when I'm buying. Currently changing oil every 6K miles, which means 4 times a year for me, so always on the lookout for oil BOGOFs etc.
