I am looking for a good set of Alloys for my 1995 E280 Estate

I have found some AMG Wheels which are 17" by 7.5",ET +37

215/45/17 tyres are fitted to them and they are said to fit the W124

On the chart, on the sticky thread, only 17 by 7.5 offset 42 are listed as fitting the W124 and the tyres recommended are 235/45R17

What do you guys reckon, plus what do you recommend as the "best" wheels for the Estate.........the normal 5 hole Alloys?........my preference is for the best ride over any sporty pretensions

Cheers

If you want the best ride then stick with the original 15 inch wheels. Go for the genuine MB ones not aftermarket - there are all sorts of problems with bolt lengths on the non genuine ones. MB ones will have a part number stamped in them starting with A124.....
Plenty on ebay. Yours would have had the 8 hole wheels as an option when new; the earlier 15 holes will also fit. The 8 hole 16 inch from the R129 SLs will NOT fit.

Standard tyre size for 17s on a W124 is 225/45. I don't think 215 is sufficiently different to create a problem WRT rolling radius and I suspect the narrower tyre might rub the arches less than a 225 or 235

It's the fronts that rub - tyre edge shape, offset, tyre & rim width all affect this

All the W124s I've driven with 17s tramlined except the E400 AMG and E500. I think the combination of a soft basic spring rate and the stiff sidewall of a 45-profile tyre does the car no favours at all

I realise I'm probably in a minority disliking this combination but then I value ride quality over style points

If you have a Sports Chassis car I think the bigger rims will work better

For the best ride I'd use 195/65 x 15 Continental Premium Contact IIs on Mercedes alloys

I have tried the Continentals - they are good but keep going back to Michelins; also suit the car well.

So I have 16" wheels. Winter, are steels, summer are 8 holes. W124 Estate. I like 16s because of the touch of extra ride height and the way they fill the arches. Your recommendations for best tyre sizes please on the 16s. Currently running on assorted various and they aint too bad.
