c180
hi i have a blown head on my c180 the oil just started to turn but found it just in time how hard is the gasket to change I am not great with cars but have a hayens manual would I need to change the timing chain?

Job for the pros imho. Frequently the head needs planed to cure any slight warping The chain guide locating pins can reduce even experienced mechanics to tears. Find a good MB specialist who has done these before. Make sure they use a genuine MB head gasket [REINZ] REINZ Dichtungs GmbH - and new cylinder head bolts [ old ones are known to stretch] The labour costs far out way anything else on this job so don't skimp on the parts.

Changing the gasket is the easiest bit, it's att the bit's you need to remove before you get to the gasket that are time consuming and challenging. Do you have the tools required ?, you will also need to lift the Cylinder head , do you have an engine crane or someone who could assist you with lifting and refitting it?.

You do not need to change the timimg chain if it's in good condition but you will have to set the timing correctly.

my mate has all the tools and crane he is mechanicly minded so hes gona give me a hand which is a load off my mined but what if a just change the engine to a 2l will there be a big diff in the wiring loom coz that could be alot quicker and cheeper if somthing was to go wrong? cheers

It's complicated- unless you have access to a complete donor car to provide the engine ECU and wiring etc . In addition I think the ECU is coded to the ignition switch--- So new engine=matching ecu= matching ignition switch assembly etc The old days of simple engine swaps are sadly gone now. If your mechanic has done this swap before he will know the snags but if not--its simpler to rebuild the original engine.

he hasnt theres a 180 on ebay for £83 so that seems nice n cheep just gona get it cheers all
