1998 C43 estate (blown gearbox)

Could be a cheap car for someone, although I assume that a used gearbox for a C43 is pretty hard to come by?

If it doesn't bid up too much more, it'll be a good breaker anyway?

I'm questioning what else is wrong with the car - OK £2.5K is a lot to spend, but the car should be worth £4-5K min afterwards (shouldn't it). Maybe the seller just can't be bothered, or it is very scruffy, or there are other future bills to worry about.

What other cars would have the same gearbox, anyone know?

I've got a CLK55 gearbox, would that be the same?

£2.5k is prob abt right for a gearbox fitted, he probably didnt want to invest more money in a high miler car, prob think what was going to go wrong next!

It's a CL500 box, but reworked by AMG - and unique to the C43 AFAIK.

If mine ever blew I'd be looking for an E55 engine/box combo to drop in...

I *think* they're different. Don't the CLK55s/E55s have stronger running gear (gearbox/prop/diff). I think the prop/diff have more bolts on them too etc.

I don't want to tempt fate, but you hear of lots of '43s with failed boxes considering how few there are about - but I can't recall any problem threads of '55s with the same issue.

I think that's probably the best solution. Loads of rusty W210 E55s out there with good engines/boxes. You could buy a whole car for £3k and sell the leather/exhaust/wheels/suspension etc afterwards

At least you'd get an upgrade out of it when it's all done. Even if it's a fair bit more work!

we had a c43 with blown box in a couple of months back, suspected planetary gears. i have asked the seller for a viewing to check general condition and will report back. what would we seriously expect this car to fetch in good condition? 4-5k sounds a lot...

Well c43 is pretty rare and the estate version must be even rarer.
Cant say they tickle my fancy:D

3.5K-4K tops for this car with a fixed gearbox. 138K miles is working against it. Estate version, although rarer, is less desirable.

No other box will drop straight in there, but i have *heard* of one desperate individual that had an E430 box fitted and electronically adapted to work.

Years back i sold an E55 box to a guy who wanted to try the same thing, he ended up coming back a month later for the complete engine, loom, ecu's and everything. Somewhere there is a C55 with my signature in yellow paint all over the engine :D
