Hi there,
My dad has been having problems with the automatic transmission in his E240 so he took it into the independent garage by his workplace. They didn't give him the code but told him that the description said "Control unit showing a fault on internal unit". Which I'm thinking means the speed sensors on the conductor plate but would like to see what the helpful people on here think.
This is my dad's description of the problem:
"when putting the lever into "R" or "D" it goes in with a clunk. No response from gears 1 to 4 with the lever"

I would really like to fix this for him as it's difficult for him to visit my nan in hospital.

Many thanks in advance to a great team
Mark

If you paid for a diagnosis I'd be asking for the exact fault or at least the code, it does sound like a speed sensor fault, you would need to be 100% though, expect to pay £450 using a genuine Mercedes part.

Thank you Auto-mobile. The only other thing the garage said was "it's inside the gearbox and we don't do that". So not very good considering they list clutches in the services that they offer. So does that mean they'd do a manual gearbox? I've got a person coming round to check the code tomorrow so we'll see what happens.
Many thanks again

Very few garages will open an auto box. It requires specialist tools which doesn't make it cost effective to do small volumes. A manual clutch is a different issue, being a regular replacement part on most cars.

Would anyone in the Portsmouth area be able to do me some quotes please?
I would like these quotes:
1. Mobile diagnostics with star or Equivalent
2. Diagnostics with supply and fit of conductor plate
3. Diagnostics with fitting of supplied conductor plate kit (includes plate, plug, sump gasket and seals).
Somebody has mentioned olly who has a mb garage in Horndean
Many thanks in advance

If you are in Portsmouth PCS at Horndean might be your best bet.

Ok thank you, my dad's car is in Waterlooville so not too far to limp it. I'll give them a ring in the morning. I know it's got the 38pin connector but not sure if there's any cheap decent diagnostic machines that could cope with a vw as well as I could go halves with my dad

Olly is your man, it doesn't need special tools, but if the garage you went to doesn't work on Mercedes I'd imagine that's why they didn't want to get involved.
