My gearbox has a leak somewhere, one was repaired (cooling pipe was rusted-through!) but another is obviously lurking somewhere.
As the fluid is lost the gearbox becomes more "jumpy" and more prone to shifting down/refusing to shift up. As you lose more fluid the gearbox will eventually refuse to shift above 2nd or 3rd and sometimes refuse to engage drive at all. If it has detected a lack of fluid since startup reverse is sometimes denied completely.
I know this because it's happened to me, I can feel when the fluid has reached a level where a top-up is required... hope to plug the hole soon, wherever it is hiding
