Is this the cause of the constant timing change
Not enough to grip to hold the chain

The clogs have completly worn out. I'm surprised the mechanic never noticed it before when he replaced the old chain, as it would have slipped straight away.

Definately does need replacing.

I have never had it running, i got it for the body kit but decided to try and fix it instead.
The timing always unset its self after setting it up, and this must be why

YUP definitely part of the problem. If you are looking for parts maybe some of the specialists in Germany or the USA might be cheaper???Maybe worth a search on the net.

What are the chances of the head/valves being ok in this situation? Years ago I had a 1992 W140 300SD and the timing chain broke on it. This caused quite a good bit of damage to the head, valves, guides, lifters etc. Although, I must say, that the 2.3 16V 190s are one of the most admirable packages and destined to be a classic if not one already. If this car is in a good shape, do it a favor and bring it back to life.

Good Luck,

Asif.

Mercedes want £195 for that part if i can get it cheaper i will.
I have had the valves out and they look ok, the chain rail looks fine, very little wear but one of the chain guides on the top has warn away were the chain has rubbed on it.

While staying in the U.S., I always used www.thebenzbin.com Their prices are very reasonable. Try them if you wish. They ship worldwide.
