Last time I needed rears i shopped around and surprisingly inchcape were just cheapest for MO Contis

This time I got the pre price (black circles and my local quality indie) at £195 (MO again) but inchcape want £252 and are squirming at that price  I prefer going to the dealer as its simple neat and I expected to pay a LITTLE more.

I thought ok will still get it done there and get a 4 wheel balance and a full track - no chance, balance of rears is £40 and a 4 wheel track is £400

HOW can that be justified ?? Im off to Buckley tyres in north wales for the full hit on saturday

MB Chester gave me pricing on 2 rear tyres. I thought - hmm, that's not bad.

Then he said EACH.

I just bought all 4 from Costco - fronts were similar price as they have been each time I've checked over the 3yrs I've had the car, but the rears had jumped up in price (tried a few places and all same). Costco had a 20% off deal which overall made them a lot cheaper .

Are Buckley Tyre good with alignment on Mercs? I'd like mine checking and have ben recommended to a place in Bootle (Wheel Alignment & Balljoint Centre). The car has never felt right but MB Chester won't do it - they test drove it and say it's fine.

Try Wheels in Motion in Chesham for the 4 wheel tracking, just had mine done and under half the price you were quoted and that was including two fancy bolts to get the alignment right.

Cheshams a bit far but the place in Bootle (name escapes me) has the fancy machine.

Buckley are ok for tracking - i really just want to know if its out rather than a fix

Ive had 21k out the fronts and on the CLS55 thats really good IMHO

Why would you want to get 4 wheel alignment done on any vehicle unless the car has been involved in a smash or rear suspension links have been disturbed or rear tyre wear indicates that you should.

Fronts yes, rears, trailing wheels, why bother ?

Im a bit obsessive and i also get satisfaction knowing the car is going as well as it can - bit sad really.

But for £400 quid, think of what else you could do to be obsessive with your car . ATF change, new wheels, etc etc ?

My Dad has had Inchcape (Merc Liverpool) price match tyres with Costco who are literally just over the road from their Liverpool site.

He had is car in for a service & MOT when they called to say two of his tyres needed replacing - no bother he said, I'll pop in and get the tyres done at costco then bring it back to you. They offered to match the price instantly! Can't remember the brand, either Conti or Michelin (although IIRC Costco only sell Michelin)

I'd rather my car was left alone - I *hate* people messing with it. :) I take it to the garage only if absolutely essential.

The first time I had tyres done I went to Jeffreys in Warrington - they came highly recommended but scuffed/gouged the face of one wheel and broke the surface right around the rim of both. I could have cried (I nearly did) but it was more in disappointment that I thought I'd found a good place only for them to be as crap as Kwik-Fit.

This time Costco Chester did a great job yet others have bad experiences with other Costco locations.

I've wanted to get the alignment done for some time, but I've read horror stories of Merc's being messed up. I'm also miffed at having to pay for it - the car is on ServicePlus and I think it should be covered by them.

Do you think Costco do Y rated 255 - 18 `s ?

...subject to availability.

They'll order any Michelin tyre, but the 225/50R16 91V's on the back of my C270 are out of stock and on factory order wth no available delivery date. I don't mind, I don't need them for some time and only ordered them as you needed to buy 4 tyres to get a 20% discount (that deal finished a few days ago, but comes around most springs and autumns).

I did have something of a battle with Costco though - they strictly follow Michelins "guidelines" (but Costco treat it as if it's the law) to fit new tyres on the back. As mine are staggered, and the back weren't available, that wasn't possible.

However they still tried to do it!! I had to stop them removing the rear wheels. When they realised they couldn't swop them they completely refused to change the fronts only and it took the intervention of the store manager and me signing a waiver (which they said they'd never done before) to get them to do fit the tyres.

Got mine done as the nearside rear wore the inner edge down to the wear marker still with 3 mm above on the outside.

Both fronts wore the inner edges down to the canvas on a trip to France so thats 3 tyres in 5 months, which is obviously worth the cost of a 4 wheel track.

I am unusua:D as a mechanic, as i am fussy and like things to be right where they matter, and trust me seeing other mechs car this is unusual.

Also drives much better and now does 50mpg:D

Another good reason tyre cost, cheapo nexen (whoever they are) £80 fronts £100 rears, pukka contis that were on it fronts £176 each!

Makes that 4 wheel alignment seem cheap.
