It seems that my 20th anniversary on this wonderful forum has passed without me even realising. I joined a few months after buying our first Mercedes. Having been a member of other marque specific forums it made sense to join a Mercedes forum and MBClub specifically.

Even in those early days this forum was different to every other forum I had even been part of, and that’s just as true now, 20 years, 3 months and 30,779 posts later. There’s a reason that members regularly used to post that this is the best forum in the world. It is.

So much in my life and the world at large has changed in those 20 years, but this forum and the wonderful members, moderators and admin who make this such a special place has remained a constant. The atmosphere has barely changed in all that time.

Regulars and characters have come and gone, and sadly some of the very finest are a loss to humankind and not just the forum. The character of this wonderful forum has remained consistent and true even with the continued evolution of our membership.

This forum represents a concentration of wonderful people. People with incredible knowledge and experience in every field imaginable. It’s a very rare thing for a topic to come up which the collective doesn’t have a rich seam of knowledge on.

The knowledge is only part of the story. Amongst our membership are truly some of the most genuine, caring and generous people you could ever wish to meet, most of which goes unseen because wonderful things are done without fuss and fanfare.

I would never have believed it possible at the time however my passion for all things automotive has become even stronger 20 years later, and Mercedes - and AMG specifically - have really gotten under our skin.

What started as a nearly new ML 270 CDi for Mrs D as a birthday present - with a matching Mercedes Duo baby seat for Baby D who was just over 12 months old - quickly spiralled with me buying a nearly new C 32 AMG for me a few months later.

We bought our Mercedes by chance. Before buying them I expected those cars to be a just launched Cayenne and 997 but Porsche were incredibly rude to us on both occasions, and the course of our car buying history changed forever as a result.

We kept both cars for many years as they were so good, and they started what would become a constant presence of ML/GLE and AMG models on our driveway from that day to this. Baby D became Junior D, and we were blessed with another Baby D.

They’re both grown into young adults - all in the time that I’ve been a member of MBClub - and so we’re able to enjoy our cars differently now, with most journeys being 2-up rather than 4-up, so we’ve been able to indulge my passion for driving less practical cars.

Thank you to @Administrator @Koolvin @gurpz @KillerHERTZ for their invisible but ever present efforts, and all members over the last 20 years who have educated, enlightened, entertained, amused and tolerated me.

I didn't start this post thinking it would be a long once, but it dawned on me that I never did introduce myself 20 years ago. Thank you for having me.

Who? 🤔😂

Where it started in photos.

This was September 2005, almost a year after we bought our our ML 270 CDI, and here it is in Paignton, Devon with Jnr D (then Baby D) in the background.

It’s actually our second trip with our touring caravan. The first was a few days in the Cotswolds as a test. The second was 2 month tour of the South West!

Where it started in photos.

This was December 2005, on the day we collected our C 32 AMG from Mercedes-Benz of Milton Keynes. Back then AMG models were so subtle.

Moments after this Jnr D pressed the headlamp was button squirting the salesman whilst he knelt beside me explaining the controls!

As ever Bobby-D your words are always carefully chosen and so very appropriate. Forever the voice of reason in many a thread. Top bloke material. 💪🤙👏👍

Out of your 30k+ posts I only ever remember reporting a handful. 😁😁😁

You sticking around? 🤷‍♂️
Your words are too kind. As I explained at the time you reported my posts, I was only replying to your statement that

Was there once a photo of your ML in the Alps or similar?

I recall a cool cherished plate for your Mrs, TINK or something?

It might have been this one at the entrance to the
Mont Blanc tunnel?

Did you wear shorts when you started on the Forum?
You have a good memory! I still do!

I had to search the forum to find it, but here’s a photo of me wearing shorts - taken by @mact - at an early forum Get Together (GTG). It’s at Jay’s place - Mercland - in the late noughties. Good times.

These days the shorts are usually a little smarter but this weekend I have been wearing an identical pair of Crocs. Crocs and collar up are two of @Darrell favourite looks 👀
