Hi all, i seek the knowledge and wisdom of you Mercedes experts.
Mercedes e320 cdi, 2001 Y, W210 engine, i would just like a bit of advice with which way to go with my alternator. 3 or 4 days ago i started hearing a chirping sound from the engine, this was at idle, when i picked up the revs a touch, it stopped. Now its got worse and makes a racket all the time, ive removed all the engine covers and fan shroud etc so i could physically check the pulleys, tensioner and idlers etc. It sounds like the sound is coming from the bottom left of the engine, which is the alternator. I ran my engine from cold for no more than 60 seconds, stuck my hand down to see if the alternator pulley was loose thinking it might be a bearing in the alternator, the pulley was red hot, it melted through my gloves and burnt my fingers. I understand these pulleys have a clutch in them, do they get this hot when they wear out, and do they make such a loud noise? many thanks for your help guys, thanks, Paul
