2002 Red MERCEDES-BENZ CL CL63 AMG for sale for £49995 in Durham, County Durham

There has been quite some debate about this car on both the other MB forum and Pistonheads. It sold at auction for £26K (I think I've got that right) but I noticed it had a V8 instrument binnacle instead of V12 so I sent an e-mail to Brightwells asking why. By all accounts the original was replaced with one from a V8. So there is a considerable mark up for re-commisioning the car as far as i can tell the brakes have been replaced and its had a bit of a clean, although it was pretty tidy at the auction. I haven't bothered to ask the present seller if the correct speedo is fitted but I get the felling it probably hasn't.
I was tempted to go up to the auction and bid for it but it clashed with a hospital appointment as I quite fancied it for it's rarity plus that lovely colour.
I've just double checked as I watched the auction live it went for £20,600 plus auction fees.

One of only 26 made. Very rare and no doubt a good investment as a future classic.

Certainly was for Silverwood, I suspect it is unique now it is fitted with a non standard instrument panel. You may be able to get another 10k by adding some go faster stripes and after market wheels [emoji849]

It would be interesting to find out when and why the instrument panel was changed but it is hardly "go faster stripes and after market wheels" type of detrimental.

They really struggled to sell in the noughties too

Well you would expect the car to be as it left MB, not have a different instrument binnacle ,that is the whole point of these rare cars they are complete and everything is original, and given it has always been a rare car just why did it get changed.

That's what the vendors selling these ridiculous-priced examples usually state in their ads too.

By all accounts the chap who runs Mercland posted that he had one for sale once and had a job selling it. I suppose this is a symptom of the totally ridiculous 'collectable car market' that's going on at the moment.

I'm sure if I hadn't have been in hospital the day of the auction I'd have bid up to £25K then I'd have given it to Olly at PCS and asked him to sort it, being a bit of an anorak I'd have tried my hardest to sort the correct speedo binnacle as it would annoy the hell out of me starting it up and reading V8 all the time. Not that there's anything wrong with a V8 it's just not right in this car.

It is if you can't trust the mileage.
I thought that was not affected by a binnable change.

Anyway.
Put this in to a bit of perspective. You see far more common cars than this that have been restored from a ‘barn find’ condition make this sort of price and more. Ok the dealer is taking the P a bit with the price hike but we’ll see how long he holds out.

The binnacle innards are easily swapped out, what did the original look like?

Click: Yes, I remember now - yes, the Brightwells thing was well discussed at the time - March this year. I'd forgotten about that.

I’m sure I’ve seen another V12 (CL65) with the incorrect cluster fitted a few years ago. Maybe a common fault and with so few made perhaps no correct replacement available from MB?

Yes there was one. People swap the clusters as they are prone to the lights blowing but forget to swap the insides out, it’s literally a 10min job!!!

I suppose this is a symptom of the totally ridiculous 'collectable car market' that's going on at the moment.

I sometimes have a mooch at some of the more popular models from years gone by on C&C, AT etc. and some of the prices being asked are staggering.

Even basic crap is up for silly money.

Supply and demand for sure, but then there is "taking the pierce" loaded on top of supply!

Does anyone really buy any of these cars...

There’s been a poverty spec white Escort estate up for sale for £19k, I think the only original extra they mention as a sales point is rear seat belts. :dk: .....
