2002 sprinter rear disc back plates

hi i have a 2002 sprinter van hi top long wheel base and the rear disc brake back plates need replacing as they hold the hand brake shoes on.
im thinking i need to remove the half shaft and wheel bearing to change these????
it seems a big job just for a back plate please help me???????
