Vito 2.2 cdi
Hi all. First MB I've ever driven, never mind owned.

I'm an avid DIYer and my mate is a machanic.

I bought my Vito yesterday. I've no Idea where my head was at at the time of pulling out my money. He somehow convinced me that all Vito's gearboxes are knackered and it was normal. hahah. I must have had an embolism!

That's the first real problem. Selecting 2nd and 4th without it crunching. it's not a simple crunch. At times it simply won't go in.

This guy even offered to drive it home for me after the sale. 15 miles away and half an hour so I figured it was all good to go.

Anyway, I only managed a trip around the block in it when I bought it. Apparently his insurance ended that day and he didn't want me to drive it, but I did a little, though never got out of 3rd or over 20mph because of slow street roads etc.

Right, we've established I had a bit of a stroke during the sale so on to my to my main questions then.

Gearbox probably knackered? Unless it's the clutch? or can the gearstick/clutch mechanism be altered?

Car won't rev above 3000rpm. No lights on dash. there was a screen wash light but I've added water and ti's gone now. No smoke, generally quiet smooth running. engine sounds good. No huge oil leaks. (However, after market K&N style air filter) I have found 2 solenoids?? One that I've figured should be to the right of the air filter at top of engine, for the turbo sol under driver wing. The other was tied up (looks more like a water exchange as it has a small mesh filter inside) where the original air box would be. Nothing connected there. I've swapped out the sol under the driver wing but no change. The actuator arm pulled in when starting but then released and nothing while revving. Also found a big pipe from right side of engine near EGR? it runs to the front and is just hanging down over the starter motor. I've since figured this may have something to do with EGR? Though it has no bolt in. Odometer is backlit but now figures in it, so no miles showing or trip. Mot last week suggests 126,000. Body is in good condition compared to others of same age. Been resprayed. Huge sub woofer and lights in back. Also realised heater only blows hot. Key snapped in barrel. Mumba seats whcih i'm going to quickly replace. Audi alloys though a lesser profile than standard. Maybe this is a speed sensor issue?

This guy has attempted, over 4 years it seems, to turn this in to a Day Van at great cost apparently, though had no idea it was driving in Limp Mode (if you can believe that!)

To recap.

Dodgy gear selection.
Limp Mode
Heater only hot
Snapped key in barrel.

So far it's the best car I've ever bought!!!!!!:fail

Well done on a great buy :D Welcome to the forum!

Some of the things maybe simple (ish) to fix…the first thing I would do is, and no disrespect to your friend, to find an MB specialist and have a look at the live data on STAR, the MB code reading machine. That should identify several things e.g. why limp mode. The heater could be a stuck flap or broken cable, the gearbox could be needing a new linkage or the cables adjusting/renewing and as for the speedo….I don't know of they are cable driven or impulse driven on the W638.

Cheers Giantvanman. He actually warned me not to get it as he's never worked on one. So I bought it anyway. ha.

i've spent a lot of time with my 2001 Vitara TD before this so I'm well versed with solenoids and common rail and high pressures this'n'that. Though I'm no expert.

He has a full on OBD scanner. Will this do the trick? A Snapon Solus Pro! We didn't have access to it today but getting it back tomorrow.

He took one look at the gearbox today and thought ******. Said the whole sub-frame looks like it needs to come off to remove it. Would this be correct? Priced a local gearbox for £100. Though better look at cables and linkages first eh!

As an aside I don't think the 638's gearbox is an M-B one, which might help keep the costs down! Good luck with getting it sorted. Is the van sound, physically? 638s have a pretty bad reputation for rust.

It's possibly been filled and patched etc. BTB but it's had a full respray too to white. Not the best I admit. Looks tidy enough for an 02. Paid £1450 for it. If the miles are legit at 127000 then on the whole it appears to be a worthwhile buy, providing I can sort it all cheaply enough.

I'll add some pictures as I go.

Right peeps. I should have also mentioned that apparently this has a Sprinter turbo on. Not sure if this would affect anything?

I really need a picture or diagram of all solenoids and how it all works together. Across the top of the engine attached to the bulkhead at 2 items. One is a believe the air filter for turbo sol and the other I have not idea as it's not actually connected to anything other than the power supply lead.

Manifold at fron of car is spotless. I mean it looks brand new. Took rocker cover off and it's also spotless under there. He did tell me he's had it all done.

Snap On Solus Pro OBD check came back with:

P1622 Y75 Electric Switchover Valve
Not actually sure what this is? Solenoid under wing?

P0703 Stop Lamp Switch
Brake lights are working fine

P1403 EGR
Cannot find an EGR Valve on this motor. Though this has since cleared. No idea why.

Stop lamp and Electric Valve come back each time it's cleared.
