Hi all,

I've a 2003 E220 CDI Estate that has done 190K.

A month ago the alternator belt starting squealing when the steering was used at idle.

A distant mechanic (claims to be MB specialist) who was fixing a rear air spring said that I need a alternator clutch pulley. He said a standard pulley has been installed which is not correct for this engine. He said we simply remove the current one and install a clutch pulley. The belt seems to be in good condition.

With another local mechanic last week who was installing rear brake pads, he said I need a new tensioner to fix this problem. With my approval, he installed a new one @£120 which has reduced the flapping and the squealing is only when steering is at extreme ends now. When I asked him about clutch pulley, he said it's not present/ needed on this car.

However I am not satisfied as the belt/ new tensioner still seem to be vibrating more than I've seen on my other cars.

Is it true that every E220CDI engine alternator should have a clutch pulley? Should I try this clutch pulley now:
MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS (W211) Alternator Pulley - INA 535 0086 10 | eBay

If posting a pic would help, please let me know. Thanks for your help in advance.

This might give you an idea on belt movement to expect. If its like the first example you have your answer. I believe a E220cdi alternator of that age would normally be fitted with an overrun clutch pulley.
ps all drive belt will squeal when the steering is at the ends of its travel because it comes up against the "end stops" and the steering pump [ and V belt ] is loaded up because its being asked to move the steering beyond its limits [ the immoveable object!]

Thanks Grober, Troon.

The VIN is WDB2112062A324764.

What a video!! I think mine was like the video at the beginning but the tensioner movement has reduced a bit with a new tensioner. I think I've a solid pulley and the first mechanic was right, I needed a clutch pulley. Will wait till you experts confirm!!

I know about the squeal at the end of steering travel but the belt is still vibrating/ flapping at idle.

The clutch pulley (not sure if its the overrun type) is not an expensive part @£30 and I would rather install it as this belt also drives the water pump I think, so there are a few things at stake, am I right?

Hi Troon,

Your list advises: A 646 155 0015. Is this a clutch pulley or a solid one?

These are the part numbers from the ebay listing (link above):
MERCEDES-BENZ : 646 150 0260 - 648 155 0015 - 646 150 0360

When I search online, some people are listing 646 155 0015 and 648 155 0015 as one item.
Should I go ahead and buy 648 155 0015?

Thanks for your help once again..

I'm pretty sure that your alternator on engine 646.961 should have a clutch pulley.

Looks like a Bosch part why don't you go into your local Bosch agent and get one there?

Your engine is an OM646. The OM648 is the inline 6 in the E320CDI. I'd imagine the parts are virtually identical, but why not buy the correct-numbered one if a new pulley is actually needed?

Having said that, looking at that link, it lists cars with the OM646 (E220), OM647 (E270) and OM648 (E320), so I think you're good to assume they're equivalent.

Looking at the information on your link it looks to be the right part why not order it from there?

Tony.

I've not ordered as the seller says he that he is not too sure. He says 648 155 0015 should fit my car according to his catalogue but he does not stock anything with OEM Code 646 155 0015.

If you look at his listing it says 646 150 0260 - 648 155 0015 - 646 150 0360, so engine type 646 (E220CDI) is included?

And I can't find any other link with 646 155 0015 for sale..

Even more confusing is that I spoke to MB dealer (Southend) who gave the part number as 646 155 0015 & quoted £15 + VAT BUT he said its a SOLID pulley as clutch ones are not applicable for E220 CDIs..

Aaarrhh..
