Hi, All
I am new to this forum and was hoping for some advice. I need to replace my two rear tyres on my 2004 SL55 AMG. Looking at Pirelli P Zero Rosso and Mitchelin Pilot Sport PS2 at the the following rating 275/35/R18 95Y

Can anyone suggest the cheapest place to get these kinds of tyres in the UK - i am happy to sort out the fitting myself separately.

Does anyone have any other tyre options i could go for?

Any advice would help.

Cheers.

I've got a 2002 SL55 and am looking for a complete set of tyres.
Not got the manual in front of me but think I'm looking for 255/40 ZR18 and 285/35 ZR18.
Are there any recommendations for tyres? Am assuming Pirellis are most welcomed but have a shorter life than Michelins?

You can never really go wrong with Pirelli MO Spec, Continental or Michelin.

Cheers for that.
The MO spec seems to be a fair bit more expensive than the standard P Zeros. Is it really that much better than the standard P Zero?
Do the other brands have a Mercedes spec or do I just find the right size and assume it'll be fine (at that size the model will be "performance orientated" automatically)?
I'm having trouble finding recommendations for the other brands that are relevant to a car with c500 bhp.

I should probably add that the previous owner stuck Falkens on, which seem ok if not great.

Where are you

London but travelling to Bedford. Either Bedford or Milton Keynes would be convenient for fitting, happy to order the tyres online as well.

I find Pirellis pretty soft and wear out quickly, I have always thought that the extra money for Michelins is worth it for wet weather grip and wear. Have you thought about the Michelin Pilot Supersport? when I bought them they were cheaper than the PS2 and are an outstanding tyre.

The current Evo issue has a performance tyre test. Conti Sport Contact 3 came top. It's a regular MB factory fitment so might be worth considering.

I have Conti Sport Contact 3 MO (important because of the higher load index) on my CLS 55 .. the sizes are SL55 sizes. 255/40 18 and 285/35 18.

Rears lasted 13k miles. Fronts are now at 15k miles, and still have more than half the thread.

I agree with that although I do not think the MO bit is necessary. I think all Dunlops are uni-directional which can be restrictive under certain circumstances when it is desirable to rotate the wheels to maximise wear, uneven wear, puncture.....whatever.....for this reason alone I prefer to avoid Dunlpos.

PS I got my winter Pirellis from Event Tyres

The MO Spec is not so important on most Mercedes, however on a heavy powerful SL55, it is important due to the higher weight and speed index.
They also have a slightly different tread pattern..

Some other brands may already meet those specs so dont need to be MO spec.

It is important to check the weight and speed ratings on any tyre you go for though.

I did not know that.....just learned something.

Maybe a little further east than you would like but you could try EliteDirect they are reasonable price and hold lots of stock, they also have a large fitting center in Rainham in Essex.

I have Conti SP Contact 3's MO, all round on my 500. Seem great so far. Quiet, grippy in the dry and wet. Got mine from Event tyres. It was a toss up between the Contis and P Zeros, but in tests the Contis just had the edge.

Getting the Conti's on the weekend - looking forward to trying them out!
